According to information published by Investegate on July 7, 2021, ELAC SONAR from the independent technology group Cohort, has received an order valued at over €49m from Leonardo S.p.A., a leader in the design and supply of systems for naval defence and maritime and coastal surveillance. ELAC will provide sonar systems for two new U212 Near Future Submarines (NFS) being supplied by Fincantieri for the Italian Navy. The contract also includes delivery of special test and training tools and associated technical services.
Work on the contract will commence immediately and will complete in 2030, it also includes options for two more U212 NFS submarines.
The German Type 212 class (U212), also known as the Italian Todaro class, is a diesel-electric submarine developed by the German company Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) for the German and Italian navies. Currently, four Type 212 submarines are in service with the Italian Navy and six with the German Navy.
The Type U212 NFS Todaro Class Batch-III (Near Future Submarine) is a development of Type-212A. The submarine is equipped with fuel cell Air Independent Power (AIP) with Lithium-Ion batteries of Italian production, which makes them among the most stealthy submarines anywhere.
The Type 212 submarine has a length of 56 m, a beam of 6,8 m, and a maximum displacement of 1,524 tonnes. She can reach a surface speed of 12 knots (22 km/h) and a depth of 250 to 700 m. She has a complement of 27 people.
