  • 84 Greek F-16V upgrade program completion: 2027
  • 18 Rafale (12 second hand, 6 new aircraft)- replacing Mirage2000: First aircraft will be delivered in mid 2021. Most probably, Deliveries will be completed until 2023.

Expected deliveries of the Rafales are 2021-2022.

Just a detail so anyone doesn't get confused ;

The 18 Rafales will only replace the 18 Mirage 2000EG/BG in service within the Hellenic AF.

The 24 Mirage 2000-5 MKII will still remain in service ;

Greece Signs Contracts to Upgrade Mirage 2000 Fleet

So 2027 Greek inventory will be shaped as following;

84 F16V
~60 F16 old variants
18 Rafale F3R
24 Mirage-2000-5 Mk2

When you hear people talking about Ballistic missiles as an answer to a proper AF,you know that you're in a Iranian style comedy, which I see getting very popular through the ME...

It's because they analyzed the Turkish-Greek comparison only superficially. Turkey is by no means Iran even if we'd stop modernizing TAF while Greece is in possession of F-35s and French fighters.

In case of war, many Greek islands would be seized immediately by Turkish forces due to the close proximity to Turkey.

Turkey has a potent and very fast modernizing navy, plenty of war ships, up-to-date submarines and other platforms.

Almost every Greek base is already within the range of Turkish missile systems with hundreds if not thousands of missiles deployed in Western & Northern Turkey pointing at them.

We have a huge land border to attack Greece in order to divert and dispel Greek forces.

There's a considerably large Turkish ethnic minority in Greece.

Ofc, every argument has its downside but in general, the comparison of Turkey and Iran is misleading and invalid.

I also forgot to mention the multi-layered air defence of Turkey...

I take it you don't believe they'll afford the F35

Not unless they want to bankrup themselves. Mind you that they are also looking to buying several new warship from US, France or UK worth billions of dollars, this on top of the fact they already purchased Rafale's from France and the Viper upgrade package for their F-16's. Its not impossible but it will definitly come at a price.

I think it's possible only with huge discounts, like in the French case, or long term (15 years) US Treasury loans.
