It is welcome, but we need conversion into firm export. Not just monetary benefit, but also cooperation benefit, credibility benefit and also another end-user benefit (with different operations etc that we may not have but can learn from).

I have been hearing "showed/showing interest" for a long time now on great many things.

This will be a very crucial decade to Indian MIC.

According to a video released by IAI Israel Aerospace Industries on January 5, 2021, IAI has successfully conducted a test-fire of its Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) air defense missile system in India with the collaboration of India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

There is no specification about missile. I wonder if it is based Barak 8 missile.

Barak - 8 ER will be a really good addition to overall SAM cover ...and the best part is these Israeli seekers can be tested against Israeli Sufas ....best way to check their performance against F-16s

I wonder if India plans to induct Barak ER with a booster and 150 km range.

I am sure they will consider it as it's cost-effective and easily integrated with existing SAM infra.

Yes this was the plan from the start of the program when it was first announced. LRSAM/Barak-ER will arm the destroyers and ground systems respectively when it's deployment is ready.

Nova Integrated Systems, a Tata-IAI JV and BEL are responsible for integration of MR-SAM. MR-SAM is indeed the Indian version of Barak-8, the Israeli components are seeker & radar while Indian components are airframe, servos and propulsion. Barak-8 completely has Israeli components. Even Israeli sub-systems and components of MR-SAM are manufactured in India and delivered to assembly lines at IAI and BEL

Next-generation surface-to-air Akash missile successfully test-fired

BHUBANESWAR: In a major milestone in the ongoing surface-to-air missile (SAM) programme, India successfully conducted the first test of 'Akash-Next Generation' (Akash-NG) from a defence facility off Odisha coast on Monday.

Defence sources said the missile was launched from a mobile platform positioned at the Launching Complex - III of the Integrated Test Range at about 2.30 pm against an electronic target.

A defence official from New Delhi said that all the mission objectives had been met and the missile system had performed as expected. "The mission was 100 per cent successful as the missile intercepted the electronic target as simulated. The missile will significantly bolster India's air defence system," he said.

The successful maiden test of surface-to-air Akash-NG assumed significance as it came a few days after the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave its go-ahead to the export of Akash missile systems to friendly countries.

Developed by DRDO, the weapon system can handle multiple targets and destroy manoeuvring targets like cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and fighter aircraft.

Flying at a supersonic speed it is capable of killing both subsonic and supersonic targets. The new Akash system can defend an area of at least 10 times better compared to any short-range SAM and is capable of engaging up to 10 targets near simultaneously.

While the earlier variant of the missile has a maximum range of 30 km and can travel up to an altitude of 20 km, the Akash-NG can strike targets up to 70 km away.

The two-stage new generation missile has a cylindrical body with four cropped delta fins at mid-body and four tail fins. Apart from the new propulsion system, it possesses indigenous active RF seeker, laser proximity fuse, electro-mechanical actuation and pre-fragmented warhead.

The new system comes with an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) multi-function radar that features all three functions - search, track and fire control in one platform. The earlier version, which is in service, is guided by a phased array fire control radar, said the defence official.

Akash is India’s first indigenously designed, developed and produced air defence system capable of engaging aerial threats. It is the cheapest surface to air missile ever produced in the world with supersonic powered intercept.

With a command guidance system and multiple targets handling features, automated air defence operations, Akash stands out unique amongst the available short /medium range SAMs.

The development of the Akash-NG was approved in September 2016 with the funding support of around ₹500 crore.

All the new Indian missiles look very sleek @Nilgiri. I don't know what it is, maybe its just increasing maturity in design & manufacturing practices.

Looks indeed much better and will perform better than the bulky SA-6 lookalike.

Integrated AESA seeker firmly puts this into a new-generation of AAMs.

The older Akash can be exported to friendly countries to keep the production line going, while the NG version takes its place domestically.
Akash-NG as of now probably uses either the Ka or Ku-band Pulsed Doppler Radar (PDR) seeker. Ku-band seeker most likely. AESA seekers looks unlikely for Akash-NG.

Speaking of AESA seekers :

Interesting developments. Ka-band has better resolution and is highly suited for hit-to-kill missiles. With AESA seekers in Ka-band, one has an almost un-jammable and highly accurate missile.

Siper will have a Ka-band seeker that will be same with Aster-30 Block1NT seeker. MBDA has upgraded the Aster-block-30 missle (Ku band) with new Ka band seeker head. Ka band has many strategic advantages compared to Ku band seekers in terms of detection range and sight angle. @Nutuk
