MANILA, Philippines — The government has awarded a $374-million (P19 billion) contract to India to equip the Philippine Navy with the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles.

In a Facebook post on Friday, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said he signed on Dec. 31 the notice of award to BrahMos Aerospace Private Ltd., an Indian-Russian aerospace and defense joint venture.

The company’s name BrahMos is a portmanteau formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra in India and the Moskva in Russia.

The project, which was negotiated with the Indian government, includes the delivery of three batteries of BrahMos missiles, training for operators and maintainers, as well as the necessary integrated logistics support package.

The awarding of the contract came just days after the Department of Budget and Management issued two special allotment release orders amounting to P2.83 billion on Dec. 27, as initial downpayment covering 15 percent of the total contract price.

The Philippine Navy Shore-Based Anti-Ship Missile Acquisition Project was part of the second horizon (2018 to 2022) of the Revised Armed Forces of the Philippines Modernization Program.

$374M= how many missile ? @Nilgiri

Each of the 3 batteries will have two launchers.

From WSJ:
Each battery comprises two missile launchers, a radar and a command-and-control center, and can fire two missiles within 10 seconds, one of the Indian officials said, adding that a contract was expected to be signed this month

So with at least one reload that would be a minimum of 12 missiles.

But it most likely involves many more reloads (A unit cost per missile is around 2 - 3 million USD).
Indian Army for example deploys around 18 - 24 missiles per launcher.

So maybe we can similarly expect around 108 - 144 missiles for philippines....or maybe less than that.

It will hopefully become clearer once the contract is signed and more details released.

(Concurrent convo on thread all through that page) missile no. currently unspecified :

Philippines Army might also order two batteries of Brahmos

"For the record, the Philippines have shown interest in the purchase of the BrahMos since 2016. It was reported that negotiations were underway since 2019 regarding the procurement of two mobile batteries for the Philippine army under the Land-Based Missile System (LBMS) program. A mock-up of the Philippine army version of the launcher was shown. The missiles were fitted on a semi-trailer towed by a South Korean KIA KM500 truck. In addition, in the spring of 2020, there were reports of the Philippine Navy’s intention to purchase three batteries of the BrahMos system. However, in early December 2020, the Philippine government decided to postpone the plan, for financial reasons (linked to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic)."

@AlphaMike

Since PH is not a member of MTCR, we can only offer them the 290km version officially which costs towards the lower end of $2-3mn contrary to what India inducts where the range is from 450-750km and a 1000+km version under development

As PH's DoND Secretary mentioned, the deal also includes training for operators, maitenance, logistics support package which is what the additional cost is for which are also more like a one time cost averaging $100mn+, I'd expect atleast half the cost of the deal solely for missiles
