The slower torpedos go further they travel so 30km alone doesn't say a lot. We need to know the speed before making comparisons.

Dropping torpedoes is a tedious job, we can see it in the video the MPA goes very low, slows down to approach a designated/lighted location; from the correct course to direct torpedo towards the target.

UAV + winged torpedo is going to lift a major burden from MPAs. And will even allow smaller torpedo to be utilized in coordination with USV which can illuminate the target.

Future is not too far, these will be available by 2025.
Forgot to add this a few days ago, before a supercavitating torpedo we are going to hear about miniature torpedo and smart semi active ASW rockets.
With smart network integrated wing suits, these weapons will be lethal.

Means we are in process of supercavitation?

- Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) of AKYA Milli Heavy Torpedo has started
- AKYA will have similar capabilities (in terms of sensor hardware, speed and range values) with the new generation heavy torpedoes in the inventory, and even additional capabilities with some features.
- While the wake-homing sensor, which provides the ability to guide the wake water, is an option in the DM2A4 Torpedo, it is among the standard feature in AKYA.

Rolling the topic back to the Turkish torpedo programs:

Orka technological development program was awarded to Aselsan, for guidance and propulsion system control (mainly electronics, ie. whatever inside the hull except the explosive).

Orka produduct development program was awarded to Roketsan, for explosive + hull + coating + readiness for serial production, will have differences from the technological development phase (expected: propulsion type)

From now on we may hear from some sources that Aselsan continues Orka project, while Roketsan is also doing so from other sources; they are technically handling separate parts of a single projects overseen by SSB.

Akya will be introduced to TN inventory solely for test purposes (warhead, guidance effectiveness, many other stuff to be not disclosed by anyone official) in 2022. Serial production will commence in last quarter of 2022 following the tests.

Delivery begins in the National Akya torpedo

The current situation in the projects carried out by the Turkish defense industry in the field of maritime was discussed under various headings at the 10th Naval Systems Seminar.

Accordingly, under the leadership of the Presidency of Defense Industries, work continues to meet the heavy and light class torpedo needs of the Naval Forces Command. Different capabilities in the sector are being evaluated in the Akya Heavy Class Torpedo Project and the 324 millimeter Torpedo Development Project (ORKA).

Within the scope of the Akya Heavy Class Torpedo Project, "early period mass production activities" are carried out in order to ensure that the Naval Forces reach the national torpedoes early. In this context, it is aimed to start acceptance at the end of the month and to make the first delivery in December. The consumables, test equipment and logistic needs necessary for firing will be delivered to the Navy in a package.

Akya's subsystem and system qualifications continue. Next year, a warfare torpedo will be fired on a platform to be provided by the Naval Forces, and a detonation test will be conducted.

Turkey owns all the software, code and subsystem codes of Akya, which has a national design and an open architecture. Studies for the use of Akya with the national Müren Combat Management System, which is integrated into Preveze class submarines, are also continuing. As integration studies and mass production deliveries progress, Akya's use in submarines will become widespread.

National torpedo above and below the sea

With the capabilities in Akya, the ORKA Project is also being carried out for the need for light class torpedoes. In the first period of the project, preliminary design and technology development studies are carried out. In this context, it is aimed to reveal the hardware of the torpedo and to make its basic performance parameters visible. At the end of the low number of shots, a new contract will be signed for qualification studies.

Akya will be thrown from the submarine and will provide effectiveness to the targets under the submarine and above the water. ORKA can also be launched from surface platforms, helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft. It is aimed to use ORKA in unmanned aerial vehicles such as Akıncı and Aksungur.

'Very Light Class Torpedo' from Roketsan to unmanned platforms

In addition to heavy and light class torpedoes, Roketsan sees the development of 'Very Light Class Torpedo' systems as a necessity. Roketsan Underwater Systems Project Manager Levent ÇOMOĞLU made important statements on the subject during the 10th Marine Systems Seminar.

The highlights of ÇOMOĞLU's presentation are as follows:

“It is anticipated that UAV/SİHAs and unmanned naval vehicles (IDA) will also be integrated into anti-submarine warfare (DSH) activities. It is foreseen that the use of 'Very Light Torpedo' systems will be needed in order to benefit from the capability envelope of unmanned combat vehicles at a higher level.

The fact that the firing platforms can carry more than the Very Light Class Torpedoes makes it possible to use these systems multiple times in target engagement.

Very Light Class Torpedoes can be developed as smarter weapon systems with the ability to attack in packs and in a coordinated manner. In this way, it will be possible to suppress more than one type of target operationally and render them inoperable.

Thanks to the developing autonomous and unmanned platform technologies, it is expected that the submarine fleets in the future will consist of a large number of cheap and silent unmanned submarine platforms that can move in swarms. On the other hand, the weapon systems used underwater; They will need to be multiple, coordinated and capable of performing long-term tasks. In this direction; The use of smaller and less costly Very Light Class Torpedo systems for attacking these platforms is important for cost efficiency of DSH operations.

It is considered that the Very Light Class Torpedoes can cause damage to conventional submarines at a level that may render these platforms incapable of operation.”

Roketsan is working on supercavitation torpedoes. It might be a great weapon for the light submarine.

Let me share a video from South Korea's test so you can visualize what a supercavitation torpedo looks like.

And this is the Russian supercavitation torpedo.
There is time until cavitation torpedo studies begin. Roketsan is currently interested in the concept.
They will try something else, a new research project before that.

It is cavitation research not cavity search.

DEMİR: “AKYA Torpedoes Will Be Delivered in 2022” When asked about the latest situation in the development and delivery of ATMACA, AKYA, National Vertical Launch System (MİLDAS) developed by ROKETSAN for naval platforms and the missiles to be used in this system, President DEMİR answered: “They are all doing well. ATMACA has now started deliveries, AKYA test torpedo fired, more precisely, training torpedo. The actual shooting torpedo is also no longer a problem. Inventory 2022. Delivery of AKYA War Torpedoes in 2022. The vertical firing system also continues successfully on its own schedule, so when our naval platform (MİLGEM-5) on the date when it should be put into use is ready, it will be ready too. Domestic missiles will be used in MIDLAS.”
