WASHINGTON, April 6 (Reuters) - The Biden administration believes a potential sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey would be in line with U.S. national security interests and would also serve NATO's long-term unity, the State Department said in a letter to Congress that fell short of explicitly supporting the deal.

Turkey made a request in October to the United States to buy 40 Lockheed Martin-made F-16 fighters and nearly 80 modernization kits for its existing warplanes. Washington has so far refrained from expressing any opinion on the sale, saying it needs to go through the standard arms sales process.

"The proposed sale will require a Congressional notification if the Department of State were to approve it," it added.

Turkey shares a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea, has good relations with both and has hosted talks between the two in Istanbul. It has voiced support for Ukraine, but has also opposed far-reaching Western sanctions imposed on Moscow over the invasion.

While forging close ties with Russia on energy, defence and trade and relying heavily on Russian tourists, Turkey has sold drones to Ukraine, angering Moscow.

The State Department letter was in response to a Feb. 4 letter led by Democratic congressman Frank Pallone and more than 50 lawmakers from both parties urging the Biden administration to reject Ankara's purchase, citing what they say is Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's lack of commitment to NATO and his "vast human rights abuses."

The United States imposed sanctions on Turkey's defense industry following its purchase of the S-400s.

Ankara had previously ordered more than 100 U.S. F-35 jets, but Washington removed Turkey from the program after it bought the S-400s. Turkey has called the move unjust and demanded reimbursement for its $1.4 billion payment. Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) makes the F-35 and the F-16.

In a call on March 10, Erdogan told U.S. President Joe Biden that it was past time to lift all "unjust" sanctions on Turkey's defense industry and that Turkey expected its request to purchase F-16s to be finalised as soon as possible.

this is not a victory. this is a declaration of "we are going to let this offer drowned in our bureaucratic swamp."

If the US Senate approves, the balance of air-superiority will become even more dramatic in the eyes of the Greeks.

I wouldn't buy more F-16 instead only the modernization upgrade package for the Blk.50's.

F4s in need of replacement and some of F16 are getting very old
Blk.30 are getting a structural upgrade and new avionics, same will be applied on the Blk.40. UCAV's can take the burden of the F-4 why wasting billions on new F-16, after the F-35 dispute i wouldn't buy any American aircrafts rather spend it on Hürjet or MMU.

Many F-16's are on order do you really believe we would get them before 2025/2026? Very unlikely.

Upgrade pack for the Blk.50 should be the priority.

What this retards don't take in account is the fact that Ottoman Empire had censuses. The last 4 were signed 1 by a Jew 2 by Armenian 3 by an Englishmen 4 by a Turk. Also they had a delegation at Serves in which they stated a remarkable amount 9f survivors. If they had a case , they would take it to the Hague, which they always refused. Bosnians did it. Anyway damn those wretched creatures

In Diyarbakir allegedly, they stated so called exact percentage of 5 different Christian congregations and said that 5000 survived out 120k. 1913 there were 73k of them. By the way a Cherkez and a Kurd were in charge there . They will never dare to challenge these things in the court of law. Let them prove that even in Erevan was a single Armenian Church. The churches were from Adhva people a Christians duofisits not Armenian monofisits .

It would take me time to dig memories of Armenian who converted to Islam and his description of massacres commited by Armenians in Van 1915 . It would make you sick. In Dogubayezit they were waking around with the chains made out of nipples of the slaughtered Muslim women ( Turk and Kurd) . Confesions of general Dro and others. Damn them, cursed people

This guy is a good analyst, this is the last big ask from Turkey. I agree, if this deal falls through - it will be the beginning of the end for Turkish-US defence relations. We will go European or East Asian and build upon or relations accordingly.
There are many things that USA does in regards of Turkey and Turkic world that doesn't make sense and on the first look are even counterproductive for them. It makes someone wonder, that's why o like project Kanal Istanbul, you never know with which bizarre ideas and dreams this unpredictable people can come up. Nukes would be the cure for everything naturally
