The conflict in the western sahara is of particular interest to algeria. the latest twists and turns in this area, in particular with the appointment of a new personal envoy of un secretary general for the western sahara, we were well greeted by algeria, which did not fail to highlight the “flegrantes violetions” committed by Morocco.
Indeed, it is "with interest" that algeria "registers" the appointment of mr. staffan de mistura in his capacity as personal envoy for the western sahara, said the spokesperson for ramtane lemamra, minister of foreign affairs.
Still according to the same speaker, a huge delay is to be deplored following the resignation of mr. horst kohler. this delay, according to mae's spokesperson, is "attributable to the moroccan party" which now means that "the appointment of mr. de mistura operates in a highly degraded and risky environment ”.
"Demilitarize guerguerat": umpteenth diplomatic offensive?
the prevailing climate in the western sahara is marked by "the resumption of hostilities". mae's spokesperson explains that there has been a "sudden break in the ceasefire by the Moroccan occupation forces". it is, again according to the same speaker, a "fleeting violation of the military agreements, signed by the two parties and endorsed by the security council".
The spokesperson for Lemamra did not fail to explain also that "the Moroccan occupying forces have been maintaining themselves illegally, since November 13, 2020, in the buffer zone at the level of guerguerat", while calling for "demilitarization of this zone ”. this is, according to the same official, "the cornerstone of any credible political process aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the conflict".
Furthermore, algeria does not fail to praise "the personal and professional qualities recognized and appreciated by Mr. of Mistura ”. the spokesperson for lemamra adds that algeria is ready to "support the efforts" of a new un envoy, for "an effective and serious relaunch of direct negotiations, in good faith and without preconditions" between Morocco and the Polisario.
