Turkey to conduct fields tests with its local-made Altay tank fitted with Turkish powerpack

According to the President of the Turkish Defense Association (SSB) Ismail Demir, Turkey will conduct field tests in April 2021, with its local-made Altay Main Battle Tank (MBT) fitted with the powerpack developed by the Turkish company BMC under the BATU Project.

I dont know if this is true But that is Latest from Armyrecognation.

Completely false news. Bench tests of the Batu engine will start by the end of April and if all go well it will be integrated to Altay MBT ~18 months(give or take a few months) after the start of bench tests. After that platform mobility test will start which will take probably a year. So if everything runs smoothly, Altay with BATU might be ready by the second half of 2023, provided that we have a viable transmission alternative, either national or ready off the shelf. If BMC wants to use the national transmission they have to couple it with the engine while the engine is sitting on the bench.

@TheInsider

In this Conference from 11.2019 around 29 Minutes, Ethem Sancak claims that they have 20 Powerpacks for Altays and they would produce an initial batch of 20 Altays with those in a very short timeframe, at the plant in arifiye

1. Have you heard anything about the 20 Altays or if problems occured ?

2. If BATU will be ready in the second half of 2023 why are they looking for an alternative (Doosan), which probably will take a similar time to Test on the Tank ?

3. is Ethem Sancak lying or telling the truth when it comes to pricing ? (Because he always claims to be cheaper)

There are some existing MTU Europowerpacks (kept as spare engines for LEO2 fleet and some from the Altay prototypes). There are plans to start production with those engines. Like the Fırtına 2s. 3 delivered, 3 more will be delivered in June. 140 will be delivered between 2022-2027.

The second half of 2023 is a very optimistic date for the 1500hp powerpack. It can happen but there are no guarantees that the project won't face problems and delays. It is the "earliest possible availability date" if everything goes smoothly. And things rarely go perfect when developing a high-tech product. So there are plans to produce ~50 tanks with the Doosan powerpack but it is not %100 done deal they are looking into the possibility.

What Ethem said is partially true. He was given tank palet factory (he probably knew this before bidding for the tender) that is state-owned (the state pays for all the salaries of the factory staff). So he won't be investing anything neither in machines nor in human resources. 50 million $ investment is peanuts. Otokars' offer was to build a new tank factory setup serial production line hire staff etc. on top of producing Altay and developing its utility variants.

Akkor is ready for action and Aselsan is offering Akkor system for MBT project, Leo2 Mod project, and as a subsystem for Korhan turret. I have no knowledge about the status of Akkor L but the project should be nearly finished.

The plan is to produce a handful of tanks with the spare 1500hp euro powerpacks(LRIP production). Use the Doosan powerpack for the first batch of the tanks. Hopefully, buy enough time to come up with a national powerpack.

Since I have had less time to actively participate in the design of our forum (job, studying, etc.), I still want to post something every now and then:

> 380 hp engine worked.
> 600 hp engine worked.
> 1.000 hp engine worked.
> 1.500 hp engine worked. Testing is currently in progress.
> The transmission (of the 1,000 hp engine) worked. In testing.

it seems that some engines, with different powers e.g. already being tested - the Altay program seems to be slowly manifesting itself

I hope you all are fine!

Do anyone know if the Firtina being built currently are using foreign engine, and or are the new ones going to use domestic engine e.g. Batu, and when can we expect the first Firtina with domestic engine to leave the factory ?

And field tested :)

1500hp powerpack production target date is 2024. Transmission has a large British input(probably from CAT)

3 Fırtına-2s delivered so far with MTU powerpack, 3 more will be delivered in June. A total of 140 FIrtına-2s will be delivered(250 planned, order cut down to 140 because of price creep). I expect the first Fırtına-2 with the local powerpack to appear next year. National Fırtına-2 powerpack will probably be installed on a Fırtına-2 prototype late this year if the tests on the bench go smoothly.
