If this news is correct, then MKE is on the right track. After the M113 and the Firtina howitzer hybrid solutions, MKE is eyeing to go for a hybrid solution for the Altay MBT. We will see if this will become a reality.

But to develop an electric engine that provides 1500 continuous hp isnt easy

MKE make it seems as if they are really close to achieving such a solution

It is in fact easier than producing a 1500HP Diesel engine with 4500Nm torque and try to fit it in a constrained space.
The Hybrid power unit they have built for the Firtina develops 10000Nm torque and 1200HP power.

Electric motors can provide enough torque without a need for transmission.
You cannot belive torque rpm versatility of electric motors by changing wiring configuration.
As an hybrid solution small footprint jet engine could be used as generator to power batteries and electric motors. Also this could reduce the heat signature of a tank in certain situations.

If you use fuel to generate electric power that's more ineffective than using a diesel engine...

We urgly need 1500hp diesel engine anything else is nice to have and nice to try..

Also I ask myself why we don't have small drones for tanks and a sar radar and a program to build a 130mm gun this should have been started 2 years ago

I think small drones started by tanks are essential in the battlefield of today maybe small drones in quadrocopter style in the air can give additional eyes..
Maybe a barrel launched drone with some more range and suicide capabilities would also be a good idea

The 130 mm gun should be build for tomorrow today 120mm are enough but for the future we may need more

TThe radar would be a perfect tool to detect anything moving.. This may also be included in ifv

What I also think about is that our landscape is such that you see a tank from one hill to another.. We should have a propeller rpgdrone (switchblade style but at least 20km) that thing should be able to fly some km and I don't think it would weight too much.. Started from infantry..

I sometimes wonder why our people don't do such inventions or do some little wunderwaffen style thinking 🤔

More inefficient, certainly true (it will impact range in the end given extra conversion losses, holding all else constant).

Ineffective, not the case.

Electric motors are extremely good at instant torque on demand, smooth torque curve range...and have other advantages like reducing transmission design size and complexity. This can often more than make up for the inefficiency of the system.

In the locomotive field for instance, it was quickly found that there was a huge advantage to introducing electric motors (as and when they became available) to diesel powerplants (to make what we call diesel-electric) given this high torque with minimal transmission complexity for it.....rather than have it diesel-direct transmission to wheels (such locomotives are constrained in size and operation).

İ might seem repeating but Türkiye already has got powerful turboshaft engine TEI TS1400 for Helis.
Why not to transform those into powerpacks for ALTAY MBTs?

Why not to create Turkish version of M1abram or T-80?

I am answering you, but it will also be the answer to others. Our current problem is not in the power source (mean engine). The problem is in the transmission of that power. For this reason, I suggest a serial hybrid system that bypasses mechanical transmission.

Yes, but you forgot transmission losses if we take into account transmission losses diesel-electric hybrid engines are more efficient. All those gears and shafts mean big energy losses for diesel engines.

Our problem is not the engine, it is the transmission.

That's why we are talking about diesel-electric hybrid systems, that were proven to work by MKEK in M113 and T-155 Fırtına

Exactly.
That is why all hybrid drivetrains give better fuel efficiency figures than their all petrol equivalents.
And as per @Nilgiri ’s post, most so called diesel trains are actually ”diesel-electric” hybrids.

i dont see whats all the confusion.

strap the wheels to a motor, and strap the motor to a small-ish battery. have a 4-banger charge the battery pack as required

boom, done!
