With the increase in economic capacity, Bangladesh is strengthening its security measures. Bangladesh is now interested in buying advanced technology products from European or American countries on good terms, out of the previous policy of buying security products at low prices. In addition, the government is now emphasizing on the transfer of technology, not only the purchase of security products, but also the transfer of technology is being given importance and it is being included in the conditions.

Asked about this, Foreign Secretary Masood bin Momen said, "One of our basic policies is not to keep all the eggs in one basket."
So we are interested in where good things can be found at affordable prices and on good terms. Our doors are open to everyone and we will buy from where we can buy on good terms.

Noting that at one time technology products were only bought from China, he said, "Our capabilities have grown exponentially and now we have the ability to judge and analyze different products, which we did not have before." To my knowledge, there is an opportunity to transfer some sustainable technology not only by finding such products at low prices, but also by increasing our interest in high-tech products.

Technology-based products

foreign secretary said that if there is a technology-based product, such as the e-passport being made by the Germans or the technology used at the third terminal at Dhaka airport, some of it may be provided by Japan and the rest by others. But only in the case of military hardware do we have to think carefully. If there is any issue of technology transfer, i.e. the technology has to be transferred as soon as the product is purchased, then it will be beneficial for everyone.

"In this case, we have to be careful that we do not give away everything and we get something more in return," he added.

Interest of different countries

European countries are showing interest in security product cooperation with Bangladesh and at the same time there is interest of America. "We are buying security products from different countries, such as NATO member Turkey, whose products are of good quality and in very good terms," he said. So Turkey can be considered as an alternative source.

"The Russians make a lot of high quality products and our neighboring country Myanmar buys products from them," he said.

He said Japan has many high-tech products. But they had a constitutional ban on the export of such products but one was lifted during the Shinzo Abe government. As a result we can see it there now, but the price is much higher there. So Japan is also seen as an alternative to pet prices, he said.

Strategic Relations

If security cooperation is high, it helps to strengthen strategic cooperation. "If we can start strategic dialogues, our interaction with them will increase in the future," he said.

"We are dependent on them in many respects, but if we can increase their dependence on us and build their interests here, then our bargaining will be easier and there will be an opportunity for counter-leveraging," he said.

We don't need to as long as it's not USA we are dealing with for major purchase.

But USA will force Bangladesh if China vs USA heats up too much.

If you notice recent statements including the article you just shared, both sides are against forcing anything. We already made it quite clear that we aren't siding with anyone as it's not beneficial for BD. It's a challenging thing to maintain balance but BD has to keep it until we become stronger/self-sufficient in some particular sectors.

I hope it goes the way you've said. But I don't find any self-sufficient sector in Bangladesh. Grament sector is not reliable.
PM knows this very well. BD will be trapped as a middle class nation forever Unless...
