On the night of February 12 to 13, 2021, around the village of Kalbassi, south-east of Ansongo, a commando group of the French Barkhane force carried out an infiltration operation to seize a position held by the enemy.
On February 12, in the early hours of the morning,a drone observed two armed people moving north on their motorcycles west of the Niger River. These individuals were monitored until they arrived in front of a house where they found seven other suspicious individuals. After several hours of observation, confirmation of membership of an Armed Terrorist Group (GAT) was confirmed.
An operation is then launched. On a level 5 night, the darkest, the commandos were dropped several kilometers from the objective by transport helicopters supported by two reconnaissance and attack helicopters.
After infiltrating as close as possible, a first group launches an assault,supported by the rest of the commandos, positioned so to be able to block the road and any fleeing terrorist.
The jihadists were present and armed, holding their position firmly, outside a building. The fight was engaged and the house was taken over by the commandos. During this operation, several jihadists were neutralized. Several AK47 machine guns were seized, as well as around 40 loaded magazines and numerous telecommunication equipments.
