Russia’s new Airborne Command Post, dubbed as “Doomsday plane,” will be built on the basis of an Ilyushin Il-96-400M quadjet long-haul wide-body airliner.

Airborne Command Posts were nicknamed Doomsday planes in the United States, as they are designed for use in the event of a nuclear war or a major disaster that destroys ground-based command infrastructure.

The aircraft is derived from Il-80. Later it was built on the basis of Il-96-400 commercial aircraft airframe. First third-generation Doomsday plane was delivered in August 2016. Russia reportedly has 4 such planes with service life of 25-30 years currently in service.

"It is scheduled to replace it with an Il-96-400M. It will allow to significantly increase the period of airborne combat duty and to extend the radius for troop command," an aircraft industry source told TASS.

The best-known jets of this class are US-made E-4B, based on Boeing 747, and Russian Il-80, based on Il-86 passenger jets. Other aircraft of comparable roles and configuration include Boeing E-6 Mercury and Northrop Grumman E-10 MC2A.

The crews of the Su-34 multi-role fighter-bombers of the Central Military District (CMD) suppressed air defense means, destroyed the airfield and "enemy" aircraft during an exercise that ended in the Kurgan region as part of the final check for the training year.
During one of the tactical episodes of the exercise, the crews of Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft detected the area where the mock enemy's field airfield was located and transmitted the coordinates to the control point. The crews of Su-34 fighter-bombers flew to the area of combat use, suppressed the action of the "enemy" air defense systems using the "Khibiny" radio-electronic complex, and launched single air strikes on ground targets. To destroy the airfield infrastructure and enemy aircraft, fighter-bombers dropped air bombs and launched unguided C-13 air-to-surface missiles, operating from various directions and heights. In addition, the crews practiced anti-missile maneuvering, flights at extremely low altitudes, as well as elements of maneuverable combat with the interception of training air targets.
All practical actions of pilots were recorded by means of objective control, which are installed on combat aircraft, as well as on the ground in the area of combat use. Analysis of the data obtained by means of objective control showed absolute defeat of all targets.
The exercise involved more than 200 flight and engineering personnel, as well as Su-34 fighter-bombers and Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft.

On 21 October 2020, a Sukhoi Su-34 crashed in the Khabarovsk Region in the Russian Far East. Both pilots of the side-by-side seated frontline bomber managed to eject to safety.

The Fullback, commanded by the Eastern Military District, was involved in a training flight and crashed during unrevealed circumstances.

The aircraft came down in a wooded and low-land area. The pilots have been airlifted back to their home base.

The Su-34 was most probably operating out of Komsomolsk-na-Amure/Khurba air base (Russia). The base is housing the 11th Red Banner Air and Air Defence Army, 303rd Composite Aviation Division, 277th Red Banner Bomber Aviation Regiment (277 BAP) that is operating the Su-34 and Su-24M/M2.

The upcoming ‘Second Stage’ engine for the Russian Su-57 fighter jet could be classified as 5+ generation, due to its increased thrust over current fifth-generation fighter aircraft engines.

“I would even say that this (Second stage engine) is the 5+ generation, slightly ahead of the 5th generation, because the specific characteristics of this engine correspond to this generation. The main thing is specific thrust, specific consumption and specific gravity, “explained Yevgeny Marchukov, general designer - director of OKB, - a branch of United Engine Corporation (UEC) which is developing the engine.
“No other engine in the world produces such specific thrust. Otherwise, it makes no sense (to create such powerful aircraft engines. Its life-span is 30-50 years," said Yevgeny Marchukov in an interview with the Zvezda TV channel of the Russian Ministry of Defense.


This is the first time a senior technical head of the project has spoken about the engine performance characteristics, though the exact numbers remain a secret. If the general-director’s words are to be interpreted, it means the second stage engine could be more powerful than P &W F-135 engine that powers the F-35 jet which is the only fifth generation fighter aircraft in the world operational with several countries.
Videos from the Zvezda TV channel report show an engine on a test bench undergoing static tests. The thrust vectoring nozzle of the engine can be clearly discerned. That the engine is on a test bench indicates that the powerplant is still under development and may be some years before it is qualified to fly on the Su-57.
Currently, prototype of the Su-57 has been photographed flying with the AL-41 FP engine derived from the Su-35. A test aircraft has also been seen flying with AL-41 engine in one bay and the Second Stage engine in another.

The Su-57 has entered serial production with the first production versions fitted with the AL-41FP engines. These aircraft are expected to enter Russian air force service by 2022.

At one point, it was the crown jewel of Russian flag-carrier Aeroflot and its many subsidiaries. Now, after decades of service and billions of miles flown, the Tupolev Tu-154 will no longer be used in Russian civil aviation.
Upon landing in the Russian city of Novosibirsk, the final Tu-154 in use for scheduled passenger flights was retired. Once operated by the majority of Russian airlines, the last to use the plane was ALROSA, a small Siberia-focused company flying mainly between mining cities.

Developed in 1968, the plane came into commercial operation with Aeroflot in 1972, before the company retired it in 2009. Described by many as a workhorse, more than 1,000 Tu-154s were made before production ended in 2013. As well as being used by Russian airlines, the Tu-154 was popular all around the world, including Hungary’s Malev Airlines, Poland’s LOT Airlines, and EgyptAir also operating the plane. While no longer in civilian usage in Russia, the plane is still going strong in North Korea, flying passengers on the national airline Air Koryo.

Although beloved by many of its former passengers, the plane also had its fair share of crashes. In 2010, the Tu-154 was famously involved in the Smolensk air disaster, which killed all 96 passengers including Polish President Lech Kaczyński. In 2016, a Tu-154 crash killed 64 members of the world-famous Alexandrov Ensemble, also known as the Red Army Choir.

In modern times, Russian airlines have mainly switched to foreign-produced Boeing and Airbus planes. However, in recent years, the Russian-built Sukhoi Superjet has also become popular. At present, Aeroflot has 54 homemade aircraft in its 244-strong fleet, with the company mostly using the EU-built Airbus A320.

I saw one of these visiting Canada totally by coincidence just few years back (at CFB Trenton).

It was part of Russian military service for open skies arrangement.

I suppose they couldn't really account for rise of China and rise of Putin....and of course things like 9/11 and rise of this whole neo-con + neo-lib degeneracy in power and politics.

I still remember Russia looked so weak in Yeltsin years...every other day there would be something in the news about chechens/chechenia for a good stretch of time....or some problem befalling russia and democracy not fitting into transition well.

US on other hand that was the golden decade, the 90s. Probably its high water mark. Clinton and Gingrich actually worked together to bring a balanced budget (an aim since Carter years actually given recessions then and vietnam era debt carrying over and compounding).

Now its all out of whack because of foreign wars and just overall fiscal stupidity. Bush 2 and Obama factually are two worst presidents because I go by debt creation as the major hallmark more and more.

Second Serially-Produced Russian Su-57 Fighter Jet Marks First Flight

The second serially produced Su-57 fighter of Russia marked its first flight on Saturday in Khabarovsk territory marking the start of serial production of the stealth jet.
The first serially-produced Su-57 aircraft had crashed in December 2019, causing a huge setback to Russia's attempt to produce the stealth Jets for the Russian Air Force. Flight tests were suspended for over ten months.

The aircraft, bearing tail number T-50S-2 (s / n 51002), built at Sukhoi’s Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant (KnAAZ), will undergo a couple more tests, KomCity.Ru reported.
The military is expected receive first of its Su-57 jets by year-end. A brand new assembly line with the most modern equipment has been set up at the KnAAZ to fulful a Russian Air Force order for 76 of the jets.

Last year’s crash marked the first total loss of a Su-57 jet, although one of the type's T-50 prototypes was allegedly badly damaged due to an engine fire in 2014. Ten Su-57s had been built at KnAAZ for pre-production tests and combat evaluation. Some of them have been flown in combat during Russia's military campaign in Syria.
In May 2019, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said that manufacturers slashed prices of Su-57 aircraft and equipment by 20%, which provided the opportunity to purchase 76 Su-57 jets. The value of the contract, signed at the Army-2019 Forum, is reportedly $2.7 billion.

Deeply modernized Tu-160M missile bomber has succesfully performed its maiden flight with new serial engines NK-32-02 at the airfield of Kazan Aviation Plant. The flight took place at an altitude of 6,000 meters and lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes.

All-new Russian Il-76MD-90A Military Transport Aircraft Completes Final Assembly

The Russian heavy-lift Il-76MD-90A military transport plane, the all-new version of the popular IL-76, has completed final assembly and is scheduled to commence ground and flight tests soon.
The installation of new PS-90A-76 engines, a modified wing and a reinforced landing gear significantly expand the operational capabilities of the aircraft. The cargo carrying capacity has increased from 48 ton for the IL-76 to 60 ton for Il-76MD-90A.
The increased carrying capacity gives it a significant edge over competing Western aircraft such as the C-130H and the Airbus A-400M. The only western aircraft with a higher carrying capacity is the C-17 whose production has ended.
The new aircraft has CCTVs inside and outside with live feed available inside the cockpit so that the pilot is aware of the surroundings and loading/unloading operations.


The Il-76MD-90A aircraft was built at the Ulyanovsk aircraft building enterprise JSC Aviastar-SP (as part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC). The new aircraft was transferred from the final assembly workshop to the company's flight test station (LIS) for ground and flight tests.
As part of the ground test stage, LIS specialists will check the functioning of the fuel system, hydraulic system, launch the auxiliary power unit, start the engines and operation of the aircraft systems and other necessary tasks, A UAC release said today.

At the flight test station, the aircraft is to be flight tested, painted and put into operation.

The Il-76MD-90A is equipped with the latest systems for flight and navigation, fly-by-wire controls and communications besides a "glass" cockpit to significantly increase flight safety, accuracy of air navigation and landing.

The powerful and economical PS-90A-76 engines have a thrust of up to 14.5 tons compared to the "standard" D-30KP2 engines with a thrust of up to 12 tons.
The Il-76MD-90A can carry 126 paratroopers with parachutes, 145 personnel in a single-deck version and 225 in a double-deck version. the aircraft is capable of transporting and landing modern infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, self-propelled guns and other equipment of the airborne troops.
Not only has the cargo capacity increased, the lifting capacity of the electric hoist has gone up to reduce time on ground. The number of ground staff required for load/unload has reduced due the new changes.

Despite the increased cargo capacity, the ability of the Il-76MD-90 to operate from unpaved runways has gone up due to an all-new chassis, re-enforced landing gear and new KT-199M wheels of increased energy intensity allow.
The service life of the Il-76MD-90A is estimated to be 30 years without modernization.

Upsetting United States' sanctions regime, Russia’s Irkut Corporation has completed the construction of an MC-21-310 prototype for flight with a locally-made PD-14 engines.

The domestic engines will replace Pratt & Whitney (P & W) engines whose supply was halted by the Trump administration invoking sanctions against Russian defence entities.

On November 6, the aircraft was transferred from the final assembly shop to the flight test division of the Irkutsk Aviation Plant owned by Irkut Corporation which is a part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC).

In preparation for the first flight, specialists will check the aircraft systems, work out the ground launch of the power plant, test the aircraft and engines while moving around the airfield at various speeds, UAC announced Tuesday.

Had one of the worst reputation along the DC-10.

The last three Su-35S fighter jets were delivered to the Russian Aerospace Forces (RuAF) recently as part of a five-year contract for 50 such aircraft, the Russian Ministry of Defence announced today.
"Specialists of the 485th military office of the Russian Defense Ministry accepted three Su-35S multirole fighter jets of the 4++ generation. The planes have been redeployed from the plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur to bases of the Russian Aerospace Forces," the ministry said in reports published in the local media.
The next order for the Su-35 jets, expected to be signed by this year end, could see important upgrades to the aircraft including engine, radar and electronics.
The major changes you could see in a future version of the Su-35 including an upgraded engine, possibly a derivative of the so-called ‘Second Stage’ engine of the Su-57 stealth jet. An upgrade to the IRBIS passive phased-array radar, electronic countermeasures and a fire control system to accommodate some of the new weapons is also on anvil,” according to a source familiar with Russian aircraft industry.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced in August 2020 that the Russian Aerospace Forces will sign a new contract worth 70 billion rubles ($927 million) for the supply of an additional batch of Su-35 fighter jets. "By the end of the year, we plan to conclude an additional state contract for the supply of multifunctional Su-35S aircraft. The contract will amount to 70 billion rubles," Shoigu said in Komsomolsk-on-Amur at a meeting with representatives of the Sukhoi plant which manufactures the Su-35 and Su-57 jets.

The need to upgrade the Su-35 arises from the development of the Su-30SM2 aircraft. The modernized version of the Su-30SM will be shoe-horned with the AL-41-1S engine from the Su-35 as well as its IRBIS-E radar. The Su-30SM2 upgrade is expected to be a good candidate for Su-30 customers such as India, Malaysia, Indonesia and several others.
The industry source told defenseworld.net that the upgraded Su-35 could be benchmarked against the United States’ F-15EX as a heavy fighter jet capable of carrying much heavier ordnance load than the Su-57 in less-defended battle-spaces. “For this, a more powerful engine and active phased array radar is a must,” he said.
Russia has invested a lot in the radar and the new engine (also called Article 30 engine) of the Su-57 and may want to exploit it in other aircraft as well to achieve economies of scale. Currently, an upgrade to Su-35 will fit this bill, he said.
The Su-57’s N036 Byelka radar system with five AESA arrays, 3 X-band and 2 L-band is an interesting concept. The antennae are mounted in the nose and sides of the fuselage besides the wings to give it 360 degrees coverage. The N036 will be the first AESA radar mounted on a Russian fighter. The Su-35 could use a modified version of the same radar to achieve superior detecting and tracking ability as compared to the current IRBIS-E radar.

While not much is known about the ‘Second stage’ or Article 30 engine, some glimpse of its features was released in a TV report last month indicating that the engine could be closer to production than earlier thought.

Sukhoi has delivered a batch of its new Su-35S fighter jets that will be used for training of Russian pilots.
“A batch of the latest Su-35S multipurpose fighters entered the Russian Ministry of Defense’s state center for training aviation personnel and military tests,” the ministry announced today.
The jets were flown by Aerospace Forces crews from Khabarovsk Territory to the Lipetsk Region. “The flight took place with two intermediate landings. During the flight, the crews covered about 7000km,” the statement read.
Five of these jets will soon be delivered to Egypt.

The Su-35S jets are powered by two TRDDF 117S engines developed by NPO Saturn. The 117S is a development of the AL-31F engine installed on Su-27 aircraft and is distinguished by an increased afterburner (from 12,500 kgf to 14,500 kgf) and non-afterburner (from 7700 to 8800 kgf) thrust.
Its most advanced feature is the integrated digital control system, KSU-35 which is capable of taking over the automatic control of the aircraft during combat use, cross-country flight, and landing approach.

The KSU-35 limits the aircraft going beyond the permissible values of flight parameters, and also takes the aircraft away in case of a threat of collision. If one or more aircraft controls are damaged, the KSU-35 automatically compensates for the failure.
Its N135E airborne radar "Irbis-E", equipped with a phased antenna array can detect targets - up to 350 km on a target with a radar cross section of 3 m2. Electronic scanning provides simultaneous tracking of up to 30 and simultaneous firing upon 8 air targets.
The radar also has the ability to detect ground targets - simultaneously track 4 and fire on 2 of them.
