Kuleba reproached NATO for decisions on Ukraine

TEXT: ALEXANDER IVANITSKY, 26 May 2021, 18:58

Kuleba: We are waiting for a pass from the Alliance

Kiev does not understand why Ukraine was not invited to the NATO summit in June. Kuleba also recalled the 13-year promise of the Alliance.

At a briefing with OSCE Secretary General Helga Schmid, who arrived in Ukraine on Wednesday, May 26, the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reproached NATO for not being invited to the upcoming Alliance summit, and also for years delaying the decision on the MAP for Ukraine. Interfax-Ukraine reports.

“We understand the desire of the allies to hold a closed summit to discuss transatlantic unity, examples of such summits were, in particular, in 2017 in Brussels. Ukraine in the Black Sea region and against the members of the Alliance, I mean the latest results of the investigation in the Czech Republic. We cannot understand this, how it is possible not to find a format for Ukraine's participation in the summit this year, "Kuleba said /

he noted that it is important that NATO's open door policy does not turn into a policy of "feeding on promises."

“Of course, we are grateful to our NATO partners for the constant confirmation of the open door policy based on the decision of the 2008 Bucharest summit, but 13 years have passed since then, and not a single step has been taken to implement this decision. reproach that we have too slow some reforms, then what can we say about the adoption and implementation of the decisions of the Alliance, which for 13 years fell in dust. It is very important for Ukraine that the open door policy does not turn into a policy of feeding with promises, "the minister said.

He is confident that this is important not only for Ukraine, but also for the security of the Euro-Atlantic space. According to him, many NATO member states share this opinion.

“If in 2008 a promise was made that Ukraine and Georgia would eventually become NATO members, and the next step on this path should be the provision of MAP, then it is difficult to imagine a better and more important moment for making such decisions than 2021. I think that the time has come to speak frankly with the Ukrainian society about this, so that it clearly understands that in matters of Euro-Atlantic integration, the ball is not always on the Ukrainian side, and we expect a pass from the Alliance, "the minister added.

Recall that the next NATO summit is scheduled for June 14 in Brussels. Only member countries will take part in it, without involving partner countries, including Ukraine.

Video from 2014 shows Russian proxy forces of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) militia engaging Ukrainian supply convoys at the Donetsk Airport.

One machine gunner militant can be seen recklessly charging into the other fighter's sector of fire, risking death by fratricide in order to hip fire in the general direction of the convoy. Before the video ends, the militiamen are on the roof of the building as a Ukrainian tank approaches.

One of the most brutal battles of modern combat occurred at the Donetsk Airport between September 2014 and January 2015. The Ukrainian forces fought to hold the airport from the Russian-backed DPR. The Ukrainians were eventually cutoff from supply, and enemy forces held different rooms of the same buildings. Eventually, what was left of the Ukrainian force withdrew, handing the victory and the airport to the Russians.

The General Staff assessed the year of Ukraine's special status in NATO

TEXT: ALEXANDER IVANITSKY, 12 June 2021

Having gained NATO Enhanced Partner status, Ukraine is seeking a membership action plan.

A year ago, Ukraine acquired the status of a NATO partner with expanded capabilities. The results of this year were summed up at the General Staff on Saturday, June 12.

So, among the main advantages of special status they named there:

increasing the list of training activities for personnel and units, including participation in NATO exercises on collective security (Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty),

admission to cybersecurity exercises,

deepening the exchange of information,

increasing representation in NATO headquarters and structures in positions that are closed to other partner countries.

"Further effective use of the ESM status will help Ukraine achieve the appropriate military criteria for gaining full membership in NATO - a strategic goal of our foreign policy," the General Staff noted.

They note that Ukraine's accession to NATO will help strengthen the defense potential not only of our country, but also the strengthening of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

"Already today, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are a real shield of Europe and make a colossal contribution to strengthening European security. The status of a NATO partner with expanded capabilities opens up new horizons for our state and its Armed Forces and at the same time imposes a serious responsibility," message.

U.S. President Joe Biden (L) shares a light moment NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg (R) as they pose for a photograph during the NATO summit at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) headquarters in Brussels on June 14, 2021.

NATO said that Ukraine will get a path toward membership and urged it to keep advancing reforms in a communique issued after the conclusion of the alliance’s summit in Brussels on June 14, 2021.

69. We reiterate the decision made at the 2008 Bucharest Summit that Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance with the Membership Action Plan (MAP) as an integral part of the process; we reaffirm all elements of that decision, as well as subsequent decisions, including that each partner will be judged on its own merits. We stand firm in our support for Ukraine’s right to decide its own future and foreign policy course free from outside interference. The Annual National Programmes under the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC) remain the mechanism by which Ukraine takes forward the reforms pertaining to its aspiration for NATO membership. Ukraine should make full use of all instruments available under the NUC to reach its objective of implementing NATO principles and standards. The success of wide-ranging, sustainable, and irreversible reforms, including combating corruption, promoting an inclusive political process, and decentralisation reform, based on democratic values, respect for human rights, minorities, and the rule of law, will be crucial in laying the groundwork for a prosperous and peaceful Ukraine. Further reforms in the security sector, including the reform of the Security Services of Ukraine, are particularly important. We welcome significant reforms already made by Ukraine and strongly encourage further progress in line with Ukraine’s international obligations and commitments. We will continue to provide practical support to reform in the security and defence sector, including through the Comprehensive Assistance Package. We will also continue to support Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its resilience against hybrid threats, including through intensifying activities under the NATO-Ukraine Platform on Countering Hybrid Warfare. We welcome the cooperation between NATO and Ukraine with regard to security in the Black Sea region. The Enhanced Opportunities Partner status granted last year provides further impetus to our already ambitious cooperation and will promote greater interoperability, with the option of more joint exercises, training, and enhanced situational awareness. Military cooperation and capacity building initiatives between Allies and Ukraine, including the Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade, further reinforce this effort. We highly value Ukraine’s significant contributions to Allied operations, the NATO Response Force, and NATO exercises.

Biden called the obstacle on the way of Ukraine to NATO

TEXT: ELENA BURKALO, 15 June 2021, 00:24

The conflict in Donbass does not exclude the possibility of joining NATO, the American leader assured.

Ukraine's entry into the North Atlantic Alliance depends on its fight against corruption, US President Joe Biden said on Monday, June 14, during a briefing following the NATO summit.

"Whether Ukraine will become a part of NATO depends not on me, but on the entire union, but I know one thing, it is necessary to convince, and this is not easy," the head of the White House said.

At the same time, Biden clarified that the obstacle to Kiev's membership is corruption, but not the war in Donbass.

"We need to get rid of corruption, meet other requirements that are imposed, fulfill the MAP. I think that it is not yet clear what the situation is here," he said.

At the same time, the American leader promised that the United States would do everything possible to ensure that Ukraine was able to resist the physical aggression of the Russian Federation, and reaffirmed continued support for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

It's going to be interesting to see what Putin does now. I don't think keeping it status quo while NATO builds up in Ukraine is something Russia wants. But whether Putin is going to risk anything remains to be seen.

As long as the corrupt pseudo-pro-Putin ppl are present in Ukrainian politics I assume Putin might still be able to turn it around.

In Donbass, the number of shelling has increased

The situation in Donbass is aggravating

During the day, the separatists fired at the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine eight times. Also, the military intercepted an enemy UAV that crossed the contact line.

Over the past day, the separatists in the Donbas violated the ceasefire eight times. Two Ukrainian soldiers were blown up by a mine, both were hospitalized. This was stated on Tuesday, June 15, in the summary of the JFO headquarters.

It is noted that on Monday the enemy opened fire from under-barrel grenade launchers and small arms, from heavy anti-tank, automatic heavy, hand-held anti-tank grenade launchers and heavy machine guns.

In addition, in the north of the Luhansk region, the passage of an enemy unmanned aerial vehicle of the Orlan-3M type was recorded, crossing the demarcation line. The enemy's UAV was suppressed in time by means of electronic warfare.

"There are no combat losses as a result of enemy shelling among our soldiers ... As a result of an explosion on an unknown explosive device, two servicemen were wounded by shrapnel. They were provided with the necessary medical care and taken to a medical institution. The health of one soldier is satisfactory, the other is of moderate severity," - reported at the headquarters.

The captain of the destroyer confirmed the shooting of the Russian fleet

The Russian fleet opened fire in the direction of the destroyer

The British journalist heard cannon bursts emanating from Russian ships. This information was also confirmed by the captain of the vessel.

Captain of the British destroyer Defender Vincent Owen confirmed to the Daily Mail that the Russian fleet was firing off the coast of the annexed Crimea.

According to him, one of the ships of the Russian coast guard could fire from the cannon.

“This is the first time I have come so close to Russian ships in my 21-year career. I assume that one of the Coast Guard ships was firing. We behaved confidently, did not enter into confrontation and used our right to continue peaceful passage through international waters along a recognized route ", - he said.

Daily Mail journalist Mark Nicole, who was on board the destroyer, told the details of the incident.

According to him, the destroyer Defender was pursued by two Russian coast guard ships, while Russian combat aircraft were flying over the ship at that time. The journalist heard cannon bursts emanating from the direction of Russian ships.

"After the second burst of shots from the enemy cannon, I heard a message for the captain that we have" two loaded missiles. "For a second, I wondered what could happen next," Nicole said.

The day before, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that a Black Sea Fleet ship opened "warning fire" at the British destroyer Defender, which allegedly violated the "Russian border" near Cape Fiolent near the coast of the annexed Crimea.

In Moscow, they say about a planned provocation by the British.

But in Britain they said that the ship was making a peaceful passage through the territorial waters of Ukraine, they did not open fire on it.

In Ukraine, it was suggested that the Russian Federation announced firing in the direction of the destroyer in order to disrupt the Sea Breeze-2021 exercises.

Russian Navy: if you don't change the course, I will be fire"
Russia has said it will summon the British ambassador to the foreign ministry in a political escalation after an unexpected diplomatic and military clash in the Black Sea on Wednesday.
A Russian foreign ministry spokesperson said the UK ambassador, Deborah Bronnert, would receive a “severe démarche” on Thursday after HMS Defender sailed in the waters near the Crimean peninsula.
Russia’s defence ministry claimed its vessels had fired warning shots, including a bombing run, near the British ship, a claim rejected by the UK. The details of the incident remain disputed.

Ben Wallace, the UK defence secretary, said HMS Defender was carrying out “routine transit from Odesa towards Georgia across the Black Sea” using an “internationally recognised traffic separation corridor”.
Warships are allowed to engage in “innocent passage” through territorial waters as long as it is not prejudicial to the peace or security of the coastal state, but the UK would have known sending a destroyer near Crimea would have prompted a response from the Kremlin.
Russia’s defence ministry initially claimed warning shots had been fired at HMS Defender and that one of its war planes had dropped four bombs nearby to force the destroyer to leave the area.
Britain’s Ministry of Defence denied both incidents took place, saying in a statement “no warning shots had been fired”, but a BBC journalist who was on the board the destroyer said the Russian military had “harassed” the ship.

The BBC correspondent said Russian forces closely followed HMS Defender as it passed near Crimea. Two coastguard vessels sailed behind the destroyer, at one point closing to a gap of roughly 100 metres, while up to 20 aircraft were hovering above.
Firing was heard in the distance but it was believed to be some way out of range. UK defence sources said that Russians were undertaking planned gunnery practice, with aircraft also exercising in the area.
Of HMS Defender, Wallace said that “Russian vessels shadowed her passage”. The defence minister added the crew were made aware of the exercises “in her wider vicinity”.

Dutch navy: Russian jets flew low over frigate in Black Sea

By MIKE CORDERtoday

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Russian fighter jets repeatedly flew low over a Dutch navy frigate in the Black Sea last week and carried out “mock attacks,” the Defense Ministry of the Netherlands said Tuesday.
The incident involving the Dutch ship HNLMS Evertsen happened last Thursday southeast of Crimea, the ministry said in a statement.
It came a day after after Russia said one of its warships in the Black Sea fired warning shots and a warplane dropped bombs to force a British destroyer out of an area near Crimea that Russia claims as its territorial waters. Britain denied that account and insisted its ship wasn’t fired upon.
The Evertsen has been patrolling in the Black Sea with HMS Defender, the British ship that was involved in that incident.

Russia moves equipment away from training ground near Ukrainian border

Video footage and imagery sourced from social media and analysed by Janes between 13 July and 21 July appears to show that Russia has begun to withdraw equipment from a training ground in Voronezh, close to the Ukrainian border.

The equipment, which is assessed by Janes to belong to the Central Military District's 41 st Combined Arms Army, was deployed over thousands of kilometres from central Russia to Voronezh during a buildup of forces in March and April. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed on 22 April that the 41 st Combined Arms Army's equipment would not return to central Russia until after it took part in ‘Zapad-2021', a large-scale Western Military District exercise scheduled to take place in September.

Videos and images analysed by Janes were all captured in the immediate vicinity of Maslovka railway station – one of the primary stations used by Russian forces to deliver equipment to the Pogonovo training ground during the March-April buildup. Two additional stations, Tresvyatskaya and Kolodeznaya, were also used to move equipment into Pogonovo, but as of 21 July Janes has not identified any movement out of these stations.

Videos and images posted to social media by multiple users on13 and 14 July show around 20 T-72-type main battle tanks, BAT-2 engineering vehicles, an MTU-72 armoured bridgelayer, and Borisoglebsk-2 electronic warfare systems either being loaded onto trains or parked next to the tracks at Maslovka. Meanwhile, images posted on 20 July show BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, 2S3 self-propelled howitzers, and Borisoglebsk-2 systems onboard trains at Maslovka, and at least three TOS-1A thermobaric multiple rocket launchers (MRLs), three TZM transloaders, three BM-21 Grad MRLs, and three MT-LB armoured personnel carriers parked next to the tracks, likely waiting to board trains.
