Egypt's Suez Canal has been blocked by a large container ship that ran aground after losing control, causing a traffic jam of cargo vessels in the region.

Tug boats were deployed to help shift the 400m-long (1312ft) and 59m-wide ship - the Ever Given - but there are fears it could remain trapped for days.
The incident occurred just north of the port of Suez early on Tuesday.
The waterway connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, providing the shortest sea link between Asia and Europe.
The Ever Given, registered in Panama, was bound for the port city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands from China and was passing northwards through the canal on its way to the Mediterranean.
It became trapped at about 07:40 local time (05:40 GMT) on Tuesday.

The ship, built in 2018 and operated by Taiwanese transport company Evergreen Marine, ran aground and became lodged sideways across the waterway, blocking the path of dozens of other vessels which are now trapped in lines in both directions.
Evergreen Marine said the ship was "suspected of being hit by a sudden strong wind, causing the hull to deviate... and accidentally hit the bottom and run aground," Reuters news agency reported.
A photo posted on Instagram on Tuesday, reportedly taken from on board another cargo ship - the Maersk Denver - directly behind the Ever Given, shows the stranded vessel with what appears to be a small digger clearing sand along the bank.

The latest on the rescue efforts. The containers on top of the ship will have to be unloaded, so rescue efforts are said to take weeks.

Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman and Managing Director of the Suez Canal Authority has announced today; Thursday March 25th, 2021, that navigation through the Suez Canal is temporarily suspended. That is only until the floatation works of the large Panamanian container vessel EVER GIVEN; that ran aground at the 151 km area (Canal Marking), are complete.
His Excellency has declared that yesterday witnessed the transit of 13 vessels from Port Said, among the Northern convoy, that were expected to continue their transit through the Canal according to projections on the time of completion of the floatation works of the grounding vessel. However, an alternative scenario had to be adopted; which entailed those vessels dropping anchor in the Bitter Lakes waiting area, until navigation can be fully resumed after the floatation of the vessels.
The floatation efforts included towing and pushing the grounding vessel using 8 large tugboats; largest of which is BARAKA 1 with a towing power of 160 tons.

I think the US has clogged the Suez Channel. China signed agreement with Iran. And completely captured Iran.
I've written Chinese's plans for Iran here.

Therefore, the US has applied to such a way to threaten China.

Let them make the channel wider and deeper. The channel was designed according to the measurements of old ships. It is obviously not enough anymore.

People says it was "lucky" for such an accident not the happen for years, as i know it should have been accompanied at least by two tugs and receive pilotage according to the passage rules, but those might be old rules and i might be wrong.
There was a dredging operation going on to extend beam of the canal, some of it was already dug but remained shallow, thus the ship had more chance to go sideways and got stuck on the shallow part. If the passage was narrower as before, it would lean at a side and be rescued in shorter time.
So it is hardly a sabotage, but looks like a mismanagement.

This graphic shows why it is "hard".

This bathymetry explains the matter

And bank effect: causes ship the diverge from main channel because of the sideways, simply ground pulls the ship and inclined ground pull further to a side. The ship had a great depth and shallow parts of the canal induced a greater bank effect:

In Ever Given case the ship has approached to port side first with bank effect, then yaw moment turned it to starboard. If there was a accompanying tugboat it could easily counter the yaw moment and prevent it from happening. At least the ship would be stuck in the side, not blocking the channel sideways.

There is a battle going on with Insurance companies and between P&I club of shipowners to resolve the matter. The money is huge.
Shipping rates have sky rocketted with this, it was already rocketted before too with container (TEU) crisis, now prices are up on the moon.
Things will get expensive, shipowners will make hell amount of money.

Exactly what I was thinking. This thing happened especially when internet was getting full of videos/news/images explaining China's international trade projects and lines through Suez Canal.

I guess the captain of this ship will strugle to get a job again. This guy achieved a bigger naval blockade then any navy has ever achieved and with 100% success. Nothing moves through sending global trade into meltdown.

I guess he can always drown his sorrows with a stiff drink in company of that Italian captain of Costa Concordia - if they let him out of jail.
