ISLAMABAD: European Council President Charles Michael on Thursday telephoned Prime Minister Imran Khan and discussed the situation unfolding in Afghanistan and thanked him for evacuating European nationals working for different international organisations in the war-torn country.

The prime minister told the EC president that a stable and peaceful Afghanistan was in the interest of Pakistan and the region.

The prime minister underscored the importance of ensuring safety and security as well as protection of rights of all Afghan citizens.

He stressed that an inclusive political settlement was the best course forward and expressed the hope that Afghan leaders would continue to work together to achieve that end.

The prime minister and the president of European Council agreed that both sides must remain in contact and coordinate closely with each other on the situation in Afghanistan.

The prime minister also received a telephone call from President of Asian Development Bank Masatsugu Asakawa. The Asian Development Bank president appreciated Pakistan’s role in facilitating evacuation of ADB staff stranded in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP), David Beasley, praised Pakistan’s support for repairing WFP’s damaged planes returning from Kabul and establishing a “humanitarian air bridge” to the war-torn country.

“Our damaged planes from Kabul have been repaired, and WFP is now ready to establish a humanitarian air bridge between Islamabad and Kabul and other destinations in Afghanistan. This will allow us to scale up to meet the needs of the Afghan people. Thank you, Government of Pakistan,” the WFP chief said in a tweet.

Standing at the Islamabad Airport, the Rome-based WFP official posted a video message on his official account with the repaired UN and WFP aircraft parked on the tarmac in the background.
David Beasley mentioned that helicopters and passenger aircraft flying from Islamabad to Kabul had formed an air bridge, bringing UN personnel, NGOs and aid workers back into operations.
Mr Beasley also called Prime Minister Imran Khan and appreciated Pakistan’s role in facilitating the work of his organisation in providing food assistance to the people of Afghanistan.

Words are cheap, cost nothing. I hope Pakistan underneath this got something worthwhile out of it.

I agree but there is deeper take out from this then meets the eye. A few years ago, particularly around 2014 western governments and media including think tanks were literally writing obituaries on Pakistan. Apparently the country had failed, Taliban were knocking at Islamabad's gates and President Obama was said to be having nightmares because of the possibility that as Pakistani state collapsed the nukes would fall into hands of global terrorists. This was actually a doomsday scenario Pakistan faced.

Then our neighbour and some haters in west were even giving out these maps of what Pakistan would look like post-doomsday. A broken country with four/five pieces. Apparently our western provinces would be taken over by Iran and Afghanistan. Eastern provinces turn into warlord fiefs or become Indian proxies. I am not joking. Serious, so called academics disacussed this with straigh faces.

Of course it was all rubbish. A state that has stood like a rock against a adversery nearly 7 times for larger, over seven decades and managed to build a nuclear deterance is not going to tip over that easy.

So it is. Today they are all running out of Afghanistan with their project having been taken over and Kabul falling to Taliban. And they all are now running to Islamabad for safety ands refuge. Do you see the irony in this and now they are thanking Pakistan!

There is some satisfaction in this.

Oh yes, but you know that the west is very good at ignoring past mistakes and failing and single-mindedly focus on gains and looking for new flaws that they can point out or use to their own advantage.

So while it may be nice to prove them wrong. In war you should always think of the next step and never settle or be satisfied with an outcome. Which is why we have armies and generals looking at threats and such because politicians are too busy being satisfied with outcomes because their brains stop working after that satisfaction.
