The talks come as the federal government moves to lock in the next stage of its troubled $90 billion future submarine program next week.
If the deal is signed French warships and troops could have a permanent presence in Australia. Interoperability between the two militaries would increase and joint training exercises would be frequently carried out. Though Australia isn't pleased with the way the 90 billion dollar French-designed submarine program is progressing, France could use this opportunity to sell weapon systems to the ADF.
The deal would mean that France would become Australia's second most important ally in terms of defence, after the United States.
