SENATE candidate Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro supported the proposed compulsory national service complementary to mandating the youth to engage in military service.
The former Defense secretary said that the Armed Forces of the Philippines has a limitation in its capability to accommodate, train and equip reserve forces if military service for the youth will be mandatory, and having compulsory national service in place would resolve that.
Teodoro holds the distinction of being the country's youngest Defense secretary. He occupied the post at age 43.
He said that young Filipinos can participate in national service, particularly in the area of civil defense, by undergoing training and eventually serve as emergency responders and disaster risk reduction experts, among others, as the country often experiences natural calamities and disasters.
"It is like the left and right hand — civil defense and the military. You can combine these two into a national service like the Singaporean model," the former Tarlac congressman noted.
