Greece Mulls Over Mandatory Military Service at 18

The Greek government is mulling the introduction of compulsory service at 18.
Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis revealed on Sunday that his government is thinking about introducing mandatory military service at 18.
In remarks at a press conference in Thessaloniki, Mitsotakis said that this “is an issue that I am discussing and the government is discussing it, but I am not ready to say anything more.”
“We are looking at all aspects of the service. I can tell you with certainty that it will not increase beyond 12 months,” he added.
Mitsotakis said it is important for new recruits to develop skills that will be useful after the end of their military service.
On Saturday, the Greek premier announced a major overhaul of the country’s defense.
In particular, he revealed that Greece will acquire 18 Rafale aircraft, four frigates, Romeo SH-60 Seahawk helicopters, torpedoes, anti-tank and guided missiles, and will modernize the Hydra-class frigates.
He also announced the hiring of 15,000 new professional army recruits and the revitalization of the Greek defense industry.
