Hungary is celebrating – the national flag has been hoisted

The flag was hoisted to the sounds of the Anthem by the army unit. The event was attended by the Central Military Orchestra and the National Equestrian Decoration Unit. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, most of the central events organized in memory of the 1956 revolution and the war of independence will be missed this year, according to the MTI report.

The National Holidays and Remembrance YouTube channel will feature feature and documentary films and other holiday-related content throughout the day. Until November 4, the “Memorials 1956 – City Exhibition” can be viewed. Contemporary photographs in the iconic locations of Budapest are reminiscent of the events of the 1956 revolution and the war of independence.

On the anniversary of the revolution, people across the country are paying their respects in some form, but due to the epidemic situation, local governments usually hold only minor commemorations this year.

In Hungary, a revolution began in October 1956, beginning with a peaceful demonstration and continuing with an armed uprising, against the communist dictatorship associated with the name of Mátyás Rákosi and the Soviet occupation. Since May 1990, the beginning of the revolution on October 23 has been Hungary’s national holiday.
