Here is the Danish answer to the Russian advance: Denmark is sending warships and fighter jets to the east

Denmark is now coming up with a concrete response to Russian troop movements and threats against Ukraine. The government will send four fighter jets to the Baltic countries and make a frigate available to NATO. It must send 'a clear signal to Russia'.

Denmark is now putting action behind the words.

That was the message when Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod (S) and Minister of Defense Trine Bramsen (S) on Monday morning resigned from a confidential meeting with representatives of the parliamentary parties.

The government will take concrete steps in response to Russia's threats against neighboring Ukraine.

This will happen with an extraordinary deployment of four Danish fighter jets to the Baltics and a Danish frigate that will be part of NATO's naval forces.

"We have a very serious situation regarding Russia's build - up of troops on the border with Ukraine. It threatens European security, "said Foreign Minister Jeppe Kofod after the meeting of the Folketing's foreign policy committee.

The government received broad support at the meeting, Jeppe Kofod stated.

Against this background, Denmark has four fighter jets to be sent to one of the Baltic countries. Here, they must enter into the countries' repatriation preparedness, the so-called Baltic Air Policing together with other NATO countries.

The Danish frigate Peter Willemoes and about 160 soldiers will be made available to NATO's naval forces and will probably patrol the Baltic Sea.

This is "a very clear signal to Russia," says Minister of Defense Trine Bramsen.

"It is a very strong contribution when you add that we are already present in the Baltic countries," she says.

Denmark has several times before sent fighter jets to monitor the airspace in the Baltic countries. It happened last autumn, but this time it is an extraordinary broadcast for a preliminary three months.

The Danish move comes ahead of a series of meetings between Russia and the United States in the coming days.

According to Jeppe Kofod, arms control and increased military transparency can be included in the negotiations, but "it requires Russia to stop its provocations and not least threats against Ukraine".

Last week, Minister of Defense Trine Bramsen stated that Denmark will not let the Baltic countries down if they are "pressured militarily" by Russia .

"We will be ready to send further contributions to the Baltic countries in a situation where it is escalating militarily," she said.

That announcement - basically a repetition of the commitments in the NATO defense alliance - met with broad support in the Folketing .

Chairman of the Liberal Party, Jakob Ellemann-Jensen, supports the decision but also points to a lack of resources in the defense.

“It is important that it is also related to a signal, a will and an ability to defend ourselves. Therefore, we must set aside more funds for the defense and abolish our reservations in the EU, "says Jakob Ellemann-Jensen (V) to Ritzau.

The extraordinary deployment of fighter jets and a frigate comes on top of the planned deployment of 220 Danish soldiers to Estonia. They will arrive in early February and be part of NATO's Preliminary Presence (EFP).
