ISLAMABAD: The first shipment under the Convention on International Transport of Goods for traffic-in-transit of goods across the border reached Pakistan from Uzbekistan via Afghanistan in 48 hours, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce Razak Dawood announced on Wednesday.

Islamabad signed the Convention on International Transport of Goods Under Cover of TIR Carnets in August 2015, which is a multilateral treaty that entails no payment of customs duties and taxes. Pakistan ratified the convention in January 2016.

This is a great initiative
It is. The tragedy is this region's geography is so compact but history has divided us - particularly after Russia and Britain divided it into their respective zones.

If you apply Western Europe over our region below] Islamabad falls roughly in Rome, Italy, Kabul in Milan, Italy, Dushanbe, Tajikistan in Zurich, Switzerland, Paris, Ashkabad, Turkmenistan, Munich, Germany in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Western Europe is integrated, with rail and motorways connecting them. All these cities are with 2/5 hours of each other. Millions of people move about. Billions is traded. Yes, after century of war and bloodshed they have now integrated. This is what we need in this Eurasian region. And this event is harbinger of a future that is possible.
