I don’t think it’s going to happen, but if you look at Chinas behavior in the south sea area, you can see they don’t like the idea that others have ownership of an important trade route.

Which is why I’d argue that India, Indonesia and Australia should support Phillippines and help build a lasting presence in Spratley islands to thwart China.

All you need to know about Tibetan parliament-in-exile election and its implications

It's a busy beginning of the New Year for the Tibetan parliament-in-exile, called the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), as it will hold the first round of the two-phase election on Sunday to elect the next Sikyong (President).

A Chinese soldier was apprehended by Indian troops from an area south of the Pangong lake in eastern Ladakh in the early hours of January 8, official sources said on Saturday.

The People's Liberation Army soldier had transgressed into the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control and was taken into custody by Indian troops deployed in the area, they said.

The capture of the Chinese soldier comes in the midst of an eight-month-long bitter border standoff between the two armies in eastern Ladakh.

Troops from both sides are deployed along the LAC since the friction erupted last year due to unprecedented mobilisation and forward concentration by Chinese troops.

The sources said the PLA soldier is being dealt with as per laid down procedures and circumstances under which he had crossed the LAC are being investigated. -- PTI

Ahem

This report came out over a week ago. They pulled out 10k out of the 50k troops deployed and also the constant rotation of frontline troops reflect their inability to get acquainted to high altitude extreme temps despite their fancy housing enclosures, advanced Martian gear and their heating systems which they claim could heat up Pluto

Chinese and Pakistanis were claiming China being colder than India and their men are better acclimatized to such conditions but they don't realize it isn't the same in Himalayas since most of China's troops aren't really deployed on heights unlike ours or Pakistanis

There is still other mountain within Himalaya range that remain unsummited, although the primary challenge is logistical & temperature acclimatization.

Yup above few replies in this thread is case in point. 10k PLA troops withdrew because likely not prepared for what it involves (logistically, acclimatize program and also other factors)... its real tough up there at altitude.

Does India Army recruit soldiers whose native to highland region? Because it seems to me Indian Army is really good at mountain (high elevation) warfare. Hopefully they don't use / consume Diamox for acclimation (seriously bad long term health effect)

I don't know which source reported this and how true it is. But PLA does have a tradition to rotate troops, in Vietnam border war armies from all Chinese military regions were sent to the front and fought for a month and then being pulled back to get some combat experience, in Chinese we call it 轮战.
PLA may pull back some troops but send in more later, it's very common practice for PLA. China has a lot of troops, but doesn't have any military conflicts with a single country, anything close to a military action is very precious and will be shared among different PLA units and military regions.

In addition to Gorkha already mentioned....there are these tough "local mountain folk" regiments (BTW "regiment" here refers to far larger mil org. rather than deployed field formation).

Some that pop to mind roughly going in arc of himalayas from west to east:

Ladakh scout, J&K Rifles, Garhwal rifles, Kumaon regt (highest decorated in IA), Dogra regiment, Gorkha regts, Sikkim scout, Arunachal/Assam regt, Naga regt.

They (locals) may also join other regiments of Indian army past the ones named after them...and other Indians may also join these named ones....but often the regiment recruitment is largely drawn from the local area its named after.

Other various Indian army regiments (Punjab, Bihar, Jat, Sikh, Rajput, Madras, Maratha etc) combine with these to form the larger brigades and divisions related to mountain warfare. They can also be deployed to regular terrain.

Officer Training basically is IMA (dehradun) which every infantry (officer) does...but where there is an extra Bhadraj mountain training.... and further than that is HAWS (high alt warfare school).

There are 13 mountain divisions (formed from these regiments and others too), 1 of them is fairly new (59th) and a mountain "strike" division .. with 1 more (72nd) supposedly in process of being raised in same way to eventually make a Mountain "strike" corps.

As @Joe Shearer will tell you (along with any details I have forgot/erred upon), you dont want to really meet any of them mountain-folks/jungle folks in battle....and you especially don't want to meet the Naga (quite possibly, for your safety, even away from battle heh).
