In yet another boost for Make in India in defence Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate the Main Battle Tank Arjun Mark1A to the nation on Sunday.
In a high-level meeting, the Defence Ministry recently cleared the induction of 118 Arjun Mark1A tanks into the Indian Army which would be worth around ₹8,400 crore and would add to the strength of the force in land warfare.
"Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be dedicating the latest version of the Arjun tank to the nation on February 14 in Chennai at the tank production facility in Avadi," Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) officials told ANI
The tank has been fully designed and developed by the DRDO in close coordination with the Indian Army. The 118 tanks would be joining the fleet of the first batch of 124 Arjun tanks which have already been inducted into the Army and are deployed in the western desert along the Pakistan front.
The 118 Arjun tanks would also form two regiments in the Armoured Corps of the Indian Army like the first 124 tanks.
Officials said the Army has reduced the number of tanks required for the formation of a tank regiment and that is the why the present order has six lesser tanks than the previous order for two regiments.
The DRDO has been developing the Arjun Mark 1A for quite some time now and the project was hastened by both Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and DRDO chief Dr G Satheesh Reddy to increase the level of indigenous weapon systems in the armed forces.
The Arjun has been designed by the DRDO's Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVRDE) and DRDO Chairman Satheesh Reddy will hand the first Arjun Mark 1A to Prime Minister Modi.
The tanks will be produced by the Ordnance Factory Board's (OFB) Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) Avadi and the first batch of five main battle tanks will be handed over to the army within two-and-a-half years of the signing of the contract.

The ₹1,056 crore contract will provide a further boost to ‘Make in India initiative of the government according to Defence Ministry.The induction of vehicles is planned to be completed in four years.
The Light Specialist Vehicle is a modern fighting vehicle and will be authorised to various fighting units for carriage of Medium Machine Guns, Automatic Grenade Launchers as well as Anti-tank Guided Missiles.
The Light Specialist Vehicle is indigenously designed and developed by MDSL. These combat vehicles are extremely agile with all round protection against small arms fire and will assist small independent detachments which are required to operate this weapon platform in the operational area.
This is a flagship project showcasing the indigenous manufacturing capabilities of the defence industry and will add another milestone to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan’ and ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government.

I feel they should be procured in thousands not a few, all Military vehicles like Gypsies should be replaced by Mahindra ALSV. In US Military you don’t have unarmoured vehicles for use even in non combat zones, they had Humvees now its JLTV.

Damn! One that got away. Earlier, all north-east candidates, including the Nagas and Assamese (not a single Manipuri in my time) came to us at Sainik School Purulia. Some of those kids later held high political office in Nagaland, and also retired from the Army with very respectable records.

South Korea’s Hanwha Defense is pushing a new combat vehicle with a 105mm turret mounted on its K21 chassis for the Indian Army.
Just last week, the Indian Army released Request for Information (RFI) to seek prospective vendors to procure around 350 light tanks in a phased manner under the Make in India initiative.
Indian Army plans to procure versatile combat platforms, weighing less than 25 tonnes, to sharpen its edge in mountain warfare as they will be able to exploit the limited space available in mountainous terrains by way of enhanced mobility, thus providing additional firepower.
The RFI dated April 22 and published on Friday stated that the Defence Ministry intends to procure a “new generation combat vehicle platform, approximately 350 Light Tanks in a phased manner, along with performance-based logistics, niche technologies, engineering support package, and other maintenance and training requirements.” “The last date of acceptance of receipt of response is June 18, 2021,” the RFI stated.
One potential option could be a proposal from a South Korean company based on its K21-105 tank.
Hanwha Defense says the vehicle has a 105mm turret mounted on a K21 infantry fighting vehicle chassis. It has strong firepower and maneuverability that enables the vehicle to perform a wider variety of tactical operations than main battle tanks.
The company also shared a promo video of its K21-105 tank, which they are classified as a medium tank.

Hanwha Defense has told Janes it plans to offer its K21-105 Light Tank to meet a new requirement within the Indian Army. If selected for the programme Hanwha Defense plans to build the platform in India through its existing partnership with local firm Larsen & Toubro (L&T).
The plan is aligned with a request for information (RFI) issued by the Indian Army in April in support of its programme to acquire, through several phases, 350 locally manufactured light tanks for deployment in assorted terrain. According to the RFI, the tanks will be procured through the ‘Make in India’ category of the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 (DAP 2020).

A spokesperson from Hanwha Defense said, “Hanwha Defense is willing to offer its K21-105 Light Tank solution for Indian Army requirement, and we would also be pleased to offer K21-105 Light Tank to Indian Army as ‘Make in India’ product.”
The spokesperson added that the South Korean company is “fully committed” to New Delhi’s ‘Make in India’ programme and has evidenced this position in its programme with L&T to locally manufacture K9 Vajra-T 155 mm/52-calibre tracked self-propelled howitzers (SPHs).
Janes reported in February that all 100 of these platforms, which were ordered in May 2017 for USD600 million, had been delivered to the Indian Army. According to L&T, the SPHs incorporate 50% indigenous content, which involved sourcing some 13,000 components from nearly 1,000 Indian manufacturers. The K9 Vajra-T system – a variant of Hanwha Defense’s K9 Thunder SPH – was built at L&T’s Armoured System Complex (ASC) in the western coastal town of Hazira in the state of Gujarat.

Seems to be very similar to our Tulpar Light Tank configuration. The turret also definitely looks like the Cockerill 3105 variant, though I might be wrong on that. Definitely a formidable beast to have in your inventory.
L&T has experience of working with Hanwa teach and already have tech transfer for K-9, with this light tank if finalized L&T will be in a position to contribute a lot for future tanks and self-propelled artillery
This an urgent requirement as we have a long mountainous border with both China and Pakistan .

There have been number of light tanks offered to India in previous decades....requirement has always been there, but there was lack of commitment given:
A) (Now faulty) assumption that PLA will not ramp up intrusions and pressures
B) Pakistan more or less countered by formation warfare in punjab and Thar (rather than fighting in horrible terrain of kashmir) .
India in hindsight should have done bulk modular approach in 1980s....with full precise focus to get good quality ecosystems in:
- diesel engine pack (say 800, 1200 and 1500 HP)
- good smoothbore gun (in 105 and 120 mm)
- intense RnD for HEAT + APFSDS ammo for the above
Sensors, armour and protection package developments would simply fill out on top of the established critical modular designs.
i.e work from inside out, from critical component level (so you can hedge as things change downroad if they change)....rather than strict end-requirement insulation and get stuck with a beast with whatever mismatch (real or excuse) from the defence branch.
There could have been a good light, medium and heavy tank platforms by double dipping into the critical things shared by all....and being optimised now.
Indian defence planners of last 30 years did not think this way and instead go in the end-item approach, so everything has been all over the place and piecemeal, and significant RnD time is wasted now (just look at Arjun for example).
Only now there is some change, there is actually a contention that K9 chassis will be used for a local light tank to compate with the ready offer from hanwha.

CENTRAL Government’s bold decision to open up the ammunition manufacturing sector for private agencies is paying rich dividends as the Indian Army is all set to receive the first consignment of high quality grenades manufactured by Nagpur-based Economic Explosives Limited. It is for the first time in the Indian history a private company is manufacturing ammunition for the Armed Forces. Economic Explosives Limited, a subsidiary of Solar Industries India Limited, was recently awarded the contract of manufacturing 10 lakh grenades worth Rs 400 crore for the Indian Army. The first consignment of 40,000 Multi-Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG) will replace the British era vintage hand grenades being used by the country’s Army till date.
Armed Forces in many Commonwealth Nations, including India, are still using the vintage hand grenades designed by the British way back in 1915. The new MMHG is designed jointly by the Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Economic Explosives Limited. Anmol Rathi, Deputy General Manager of the company, told ‘The Hitavada’ on Saturday that a team of senior officers of DRDO and other concerned agencies would soon conduct a pre-delivery inspection of the consignment and pave way for material dispatch. It will happen within the next 8 to 10 days, he said. Highlighting the salient features of the MMHG, Rathi said that the grenades offer numerous advantages to soldiers in terms of safety and lethality compared to the vintage hand grenades. The new grenades come with dual mode – defensive and offensive. In defensive mode, the grenade is assembled with its fragmenting sleeve.
This mode is used while the soldier is in shelter and the enemy is in the open area. Its lethal radius is achieved up to eight meters from the point of burst. In the offensive mode, the grenade is without its fragmenting sleeve and is used for low intensity conflict as it offers stunning effect. The mode is used when the soldier is in attacking mode and its lethal radius is up to five meters from the point of burst. Besides, they are lightweight and can be primed and unprimed many times without affecting the functional efficiency. Until a decade ago, ammunition manufacturing was in the sole domain of Government agencies and it was beyond the imagination that the private sector could foray into this field. But the glass ceiling was broken by Solar Group in the year 2015 by entering into the field of ammunition manufacturing for defence.
Indonesia to buy grenades from Solar Industries Impressed by the safety and lethality of Multi Mode Hand Grenades, many foreign countries are showing interest in the product made by the Indian private company. Some have already started negotiations while Indonesia is the first foreign nation to place an order for the grenades. The Government of India has recently given in-principle approval to Economic Explosives Limited to supply the grenades to Indonesia.
