Finally going thru final clearance @Paro @Nilgiri @crixus @Lonewolf

In a milestone for India's defence export drive, the Philippines has accepted a proposal by the consortium making the BrahMos missile to supply the weapon at a price of $375 million.

This development brings closer to reality the first export deal for the BrahMos missile, which was jointly developed by India and Russia.

Philippines will buy the BrahMos missile in a shore-based coastal defence role. The BrahMos is a supersonic missile with a range of nearly 300km. ANI reported “The Notice of Award has been communicated to BrahMos officials by the Philippines Department of National Defense”.

India had been promoting the BrahMos missile to Philippines for several years, though negotiations had been hit by the pandemic.

In late December, the Philippines Department of Budget Management allocated resources to “cover the initial funding requirements for the shore-based anti-ship missile system acquisition project of the Philippine Navy”.

It is learnt that initially, the Philippines will procure the missiles for its navy though the country is also looking at the weapons for its land forces as well.

The BrahMos is also being promoted for export across Southeast Asia, Middle East and Latin America.

375 million USD , quite a big order . Maybe the intended 3 batteries will be delivered .
Quite a decent sized order given each missile costs around $2.5mn...

@Gessler any idea how much does the launcher cost since Philippines are acquiring shore launched systems

There is a good chance Philippines Army might also order two batteries of Brahmos

"For the record, the Philippines have shown interest in the purchase of the BrahMos since 2016. It was reported that negotiations were underway since 2019 regarding the procurement of two mobile batteries for the Philippine army under the Land-Based Missile System (LBMS) program. A mock-up of the Philippine army version of the launcher was shown. The missiles were fitted on a semi-trailer towed by a South Korean KIA KM500 truck. In addition, in the spring of 2020, there were reports of the Philippine Navy’s intention to purchase three batteries of the BrahMos system. However, in early December 2020, the Philippine government decided to postpone the plan, for financial reasons (linked to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic)."

Any official source of the range?

There was some speculation on twitter about the range, nothing official other than its "extended" I guess.

But twitter noted the area of notice stretched out about 750 km, so maybe this is the 600 km version that was mentioned in 2016.

I guess we will see later.

The NOTAM is for 750km while TASS also reported the development of P800 Oniks ER version previously in 2019. An year before, HT reported that an 800km Brahmos will be tested. Unsure if that took place but TASS did report last year that Russia & India are working on the development of 800km Brahmos

What kind of Turbofan used on the BrahMos or Nirbhay ? Can't seem to find one on the net @Nilgiri
Brahmos is a two stage missile with a solid propellant booster followed by a liquid ramjet. Infact, all components including the booster, seeker, onboard electronics and airframe are developed by DRDO while ramjet is the only Russian component (since Brahmos is still a JV) and is similar to the one used in P-800 Oniks

As for Nirbhay, it used the Russian NPO Saturn 36MT engine until last year where it was replaced with DRDO's Manik engine

NASM-SR and NASM-MR (bottom-right) via Godofparadoxes

MR appears to be a fundamentally different missile system with a different propulsion setup. Seems to be a derivative of Nirbhay (if the pic is correct).

Makes sense...SR is mostly intended for air-launched applications from naval helicopters/aircraft whereas MR seems to be designed for VLS launch. A lighter, cheaper subsonic alternative for the heavy, expensive BrahMos used on frontline ships. The MR in VLS or box launchers could be a very affordable option for lighter ships like NGMV or NGC.
