From December 2020 to May 2022, Denmark will lead NATO's advisory mission in Iraq. Denmark also contributes to the international coalition, which since 2014 has helped Iraq in the fight against ISIL. Both missions strengthen Iraq's capabilities to provide security for the country itself.

Denmark is currently contributing to two different international military operations, both of which are working to strengthen the Iraqi state's ability to take care of security in the country itself. These are the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve and the NATO Mission Iraq.
The mission of NATO's advisory mission is to advise the Iraqi Ministry of Defense, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and Iraqi military schools and educational institutions. The mission is thus not a combat mission. The mission consists of a total of about 500 people.
The Danish contribution to the mission consists of:
Head of Mission - Lieutenant General Michael Lollesgaard
A command team under the command of the mission
A bodyguard contribution that implements personal protection of the boss during his task solution outside secured premises.
A staff contribution that is part of the staff of the mission.
A security and escort contribution that carries out security and escort duties for NMI personnel in and around Baghdad.
A Danish element (DANELM) that provides national support to personnel and units in the mission area. The tasks include administration, logistics and management support.
A National Support Element (NSE) that provides national logistical support to all Danish personnel and units in the mission area. NSE is located at Ali al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and also provides support for the Danish contributions to the OIR in Iraq, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.
From May 2021 to May 2022, a contribution of two EH101 troop transport helicopters is included.
The total Danish contribution is up to 140 soldiers + the helicopter contribution of approximately 70 soldiers)
NATO Mission Iraq was established in July 2018 following an invitation from the Iraqi Government. Denmark has previously contributed to the mission with staff officers and at times also sent training teams to the mission.

Since 2014, when the terrorist movement ISIL conquered a large part of Iraq and Syria and drove millions of people into exile, Denmark has contributed to the US-led Operation Inherent Resolve, which has had the participation of up to 70 countries and organizations.
Denmark has contributed to the mission with fighter jets and transport aircraft, a radar with operators as well as with trainers who have trained Iraqi security forces. Denmark has also provided staff officers to the operation's headquarters. Read more about the previous Danish contributions via the related links under the article.
The Danish radar was taken home in 2019, and the Danish training contribution was shut down in early 2020.

- Operators from the Air Force who contribute to the coalition's air operations. They are deployed to the Al Dhafra air base in the United Arab Emirates.

Danmark bidrager til NATOs rådgivningsmission i Irak. Danmark bidrager også til den internationale koalition, der siden 2014 har hjulpet Irak i kampen mod ISIL. Begge missioner styrker Iraks evner til selv at kunne varetage sikkerheden i landet.
