The maintenance of Gripen fighters is generally considered to be more base/hangar independent compared to F-16s, and Gripen's ability to take off and land on highways contributes to its mobile and simplified maintenance. Here are some key points:

1. Road Operations: Gripen fighters are designed to operate from dispersed and austere locations, including highways. This capability allows for increased operational flexibility and reduces the dependency on traditional airbases. In case of conflict or emergencies, Gripen aircraft can utilize highways as temporary runways, enabling them to be deployed closer to the action.

2. Mobile Maintenance: Gripen's emphasis on mobile maintenance is aimed at reducing turnaround times and increasing operational availability. The Gripen's design incorporates features that facilitate quick and efficient maintenance, such as easily accessible components and modular systems. This allows for on-site repairs and reduces the need for extensive infrastructure and specialized facilities.

3. Diagnostics and Health Monitoring: Gripen aircraft are equipped with advanced diagnostic and health monitoring systems. These systems provide real-time data on the aircraft's condition, allowing maintenance crews to quickly identify and address any issues. The ability to diagnose problems on the ground or in the field increases the efficiency of maintenance operations.

4. Simplicity and Ease of Maintenance: Gripen's design philosophy emphasizes simplicity and ease of maintenance. The aircraft incorporates features such as modular construction, which allows for the quick replacement of components, and built-in test equipment, which simplifies troubleshooting. These design aspects contribute to reduced maintenance complexities and shorter turnaround times.

5. Support and Logistics: Gripen's manufacturers and suppliers provide comprehensive support and logistics solutions, including mobile maintenance units, spare parts management, and training programs. These offerings further enhance the mobile and simplified maintenance capabilities of the Gripen fleet.

It's important to note that while Gripen's design enables mobile and simplified maintenance, the specific maintenance requirements may vary depending on the operational context and the infrastructure available to the Ukrainian air force.

The Gripen fighters are considered better suited for the Ukrainian air force from a technical standpoint due to several reasons:
IMG_20230819_234739_507.jpg

1. Adaptability and Versatility: The Gripen is known for its adaptability to various operational scenarios. It can fulfill multiple roles such as air-to-air combat, air-to-ground attacks, reconnaissance, and more. This versatility allows it to effectively respond to a wide range of threats and missions.

2. Advanced Avionics: The Gripen is equipped with advanced avionics systems, including a modern radar system, electronic warfare capabilities, and a comprehensive sensor suite. These systems provide enhanced situational awareness, allowing pilots to effectively detect, track, and engage targets.

3. Superior Maneuverability: The Gripen is known for its exceptional maneuverability, which enables it to outperform many other fighter aircraft. It has a high thrust-to-weight ratio, advanced flight control systems, and can operate effectively in both high and low altitudes. This agility is crucial in air combat situations.

4. Cost-Effective Operation: The Gripen has a relatively low operating cost compared to other modern fighter aircraft. It is designed to be easy to maintain and has a high availability rate, reducing maintenance and downtime costs. This makes it a cost-effective option for the Ukrainian air force, which can allocate resources to other critical areas.

5. Interoperability and Compatibility: The Gripen is compatible with NATO standards, which is beneficial for Ukraine as it seeks to align itself with Western defense structures. It can easily integrate with NATO's command and control systems, communication networks, and other allied assets, enhancing interoperability during joint operations.

6. Training and Support: The Gripen offers comprehensive training and support packages, including pilot training, maintenance support, and logistics. This ensures that Ukrainian pilots and ground personnel receive the necessary training and assistance to operate and maintain the aircraft effectively.

In summary, the Gripen's adaptability, advanced avionics, maneuverability, cost-effective operation, interoperability, and comprehensive training and support make it a technically suitable choice for the Ukrainian air force.

F-16 and Eurofighter Typhoon are on the wish list for Ukraine

The Swedish Gripen fighter is a good alternative to the F-16 for a number of reasons, Sergey Nikiforov noted.

Ukraine is focused on obtaining four types of aircraft from Western partners. Presidential speaker Sergei Nikiforov said this on the air of the telethon on Saturday, August 19.

“We are really focused on the F-16, the reason is that more of them were made and it is purely mathematically easier to get them. But we are not only focused on them. We have, let's say, in order of desirability to obtain a list of four types of aircraft: F-16, Gripen, French Rafale and Eurofighter Typhoon," Nikiforov said.

He noted that the Swedish aircraft Gripen is a good alternative.

“It is universal, it is less demanding, and it has shown itself very well. Ukrainian pilots are now being tested on this type of aircraft, and the reviews are very good,” the Presidential Speaker said.

According to Nikiforov, in order to talk about obtaining this type of aircraft, it is necessary to take three steps: testing the aircraft and the capabilities of Ukrainian pilots, which is currently ongoing, training, political consent, and only then providing this equipment.

"So far, this is a theoretical possibility. We are looking at what can be done," Nikiforov summed up.

Recall that today President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Sweden, where he met with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. During the negotiations, the issue of a possible transfer of Gripen fighters to Ukraine was raised.

In June, it became known that Sweden would train Ukrainians on the Gripen. Then it was about the introductory training of Ukrainian pilots and aviation technical personnel.

Political will rises currently

I asked to AI and the answer:

-Yes, Gripen fighters can land with underwing pods armed on highways. The Gripen aircraft, specifically the Gripen E/F variant, is designed to have the ability to operate from dispersed and austere locations, including public roads and highways. This means that it can land and take off from highways with underwing pods armed.

While it may not be common to see Gripen aircraft landing or taking off with weapons loaded underwing pods in civilian areas, they are capable of doing so. The ability to operate from public roads and highways is part of the Gripen's design philosophy, which emphasizes flexibility and adaptability in various operating conditions.

It's important to note that the exact operational procedures and regulations for using public roads and highways as runways may vary depending on specific military requirements and local regulations. However, the Gripen's design and capabilities are intended to enable it to operate in such environments.

Sweden Might Consider Supply Of Gripen Fighters To Ukraine

Swedish media reported that the government will soon ask the armed forces to investigate the possibility of transferring Gripen fighters to Ukraine.
The investigation is meant to look at how the transfer of a still unspecified number of Gripens, which some sources state it could be a sixth of the total fleet or at least 16 aircraft, could affect the Swedish defence capability.
