The Israeli Navy held an exercise with the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet for the first time on Tuesday. During the exercise, the navies practiced defense, rescue and other scenarios. The collaboration was aimed mainly at learning from each other and strengthening ties between the navies.

The exercise marked the start of joint work by the Navy and the 5th Fleet as part of Israel's shift to the area of responsibility of the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

The cooperation between the navies is intended to protect maritime trade routes and help maintain regional security.

The head of operations for the Israeli Navy, Brig. Gen. Daniel Hagari, said "The partnership with the 5th Fleet is a strategic partnership for the security of the region and the security of Israel. This exercise is the start of a partnership that will expand and increase the scope of defense and security in the maritime domain to prevent terrorist activities."
