TRIPOLI, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- The best way to hold successful elections in Libya is by holding a referendum on the constitution, Chairman of Libya's High Council of State Khaled al-Meshri said Friday.

The chairman made the remarks during a meeting with Stephanie Williams, UN special adviser on Libya, in which the two sides discussed ways to "facilitate the holding of successful elections as soon as possible," according to a statement issued by the council.

He also stressed the need for consensual election laws as the basis for free and fair elections, the results of which are accepted by all Libyan parties.

Libya was expected to hold general elections on Dec. 24, 2021. However, the elections were postponed indefinitely due to technical and legal issues.

In November, al-Meshri urged voters not to participate in the elections, describing as "shameful" the election laws issued by the Libyan House of Representatives in September and October.

The oil-rich North African country has been in turmoil since the fall of late leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
The elections are part of a roadmap adopted by the UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, with the aim of ensuring stability in Libya following years of political division and insecurity. ■
