United States Navy And Lockheed Martin Successfully Test Key Capabilities Of Advanced Off-Board Electronic Warfare System

BETHESDA, Md. Dec. 12, 2023
– Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) supported a successful government test of the Advanced Off-Board Electronic Warfare (AOEW) system’s electronic attack capabilities while installed on a U.S. Navy MH-60R helicopter. This marked the first time in the program’s development the system was able to perform engagement testing, demonstrate the ability to deter threats, and quantify system performance, while integrated and controlled by the target platform.

In partnership with the U.S. Navy at Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland, this integration event tested the capabilities of the system and operability on the MH-60R helicopter platform. While the system is designed for both the MH-60R and MR-60S host platforms, only the MH-60R was used for this test.

Strategic Perspectives

“The AOEW system is one of the most advanced, complex electronic warfare systems ever developed,”
said Deon Viergutz, vice president of Spectrum Convergence at Lockheed Martin. “AOEW is a force multiplier for our Sailors that will help them dominate and control the battlespace without ever firing a single shot. It is designed with evolutionary capabilities, set up to be completely programmable so that it can develop, deliver and deploy new techniques as the threat landscape changes.”

Dive Deeper

AOEW is a pod-based electronic warfare missile defense system that will provide U.S. Navy with enhanced electronic surveillance and attack capabilities against anti-ship missile threats. To date, the system has successfully undergone a series of incremental developmental and operational tests at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Syracuse, New York.

  • AOEW can be fully integrated with Aegis Baseline 9C.2+ and the Surface Warfare Electronic Warfare Improvement Program Block II.

  • The system can work independently or with other systems onboard ships and other assets.

  • AOEW leverages open-systems architected solutions, allowing for rapid upgrades, interoperability, reduced lifecycle costs and prompt insertion of new hardware.

  • The architecture and technologies of AOEW lay the groundwork to deliver similar capabilities on other assets such as small ships or unmanned aerial and surface vehicles.
What’s Next

More tests and demonstrations of the AOEW pod on host platforms are planned in 2024. The team will use the results to continue to refine system performance. Currently, AOEW is under a low-rate initial production contract and deliveries of the first AOEW units are expected in the next year.

Lockheed Martin, Verizon Demonstrate 5G Streaming For Sustainment Applications

PALMDALE, Calif., Dec. 18, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Lockheed Martin Skunk Works® (NYSE: LMT) and Verizon (NYSE, Nasdaq: VZ) demonstrated 5G streaming for real-time visualization content on edge computing devices to advance Department of Defense (DOD) sustainment missions.

As part of an ongoing strategic collaboration, the companies validated three key technology areas:

  • 5G at the edge for latency critical interactions of complex visualization applications such as augmented, virtual, or extended reality experiences
  • Streaming of real-time, complex, 3D visualization content
  • Streaming to edge compute devices including tablets, mobile, Head Mounted Displays (HMDs), and more

These technologies enable Lockheed Martin's "Maintainer as a Node" concept, by which a connected maintainer receives all the information where, when and how it is needed in a latency-critical environment.

"Streaming is the future, and through our strategic collaboration with Verizon, together we're advancing crucial 21st Century Security technologies that drive speed, efficiency, quality and reliability where our customers need it most," said Marc O'Brien, senior manager of Virtual Prototyping at Lockheed Martin Skunk Works.

This year, Lockheed Martin and Verizon focused on content streaming for sustainment use cases where advanced visualization capabilities are critical to supporting the maintainer with Resilient Logistics in a Contested Environment (RLCE). Examples of these use cases include:

  • 3D step-based work instructions
  • Augmented/virtual/extended reality content deployment
  • Remote desktop of high-end, real-time, 3D applications scenarios
  • Remote assistance and other 3D graphically intensive applications

The cases demonstrated a multi-user, augmented reality experience across multiple geolocations streaming a large 3D CAD airspace engine in real-time. The target display device was a HoloLens, which used the project collaborator Holo-Light's streaming platform along with Verizon 5G Edge with AWS Wavelength over Verizon's 5G network. The demonstration highlights the value of future streaming approaches for sustainment applications, ensuring that data is secure and content is efficient and effective.

"This effort demonstrates how Verizon's partnership with Lockheed Martin leverages the immense capabilities of 5G and edge computing to transform data streaming and AR experiences to produce advanced capabilities for military sustainment operations," said Chris Halton, vice president of Product Strategy and Innovation at Verizon.

This effort coincides with a broader collaboration between Lockheed Martin and Verizon to advance critical 5G.MIL® data-sharing applications for the DOD, improving security, resiliency, interoperability and performance with a combination of commercial and government-driven technology. This collaboration and demonstration are prime examples of Lockheed Martin's 21st Century Security vision to rapidly deliver game-changing capabilities to U.S. military customers.

“Our focus to support not only the Spanish Navy’s mission needs but also our allies around the globe are foundational to our relationship with Navantia. Over nearly three decades, we have expanded our collaboration to develop key capabilities and mission solutions from undersea warfare to integrated air and missile defense. We look forward to building upon our success and to equip service members with advanced technology solutions,” said Joe DePietro, C6ISR vice president at Lockheed Martin.

“We are honored to renew and expand this long-standing relationship with Lockheed Martin, which has enabled us to offer state-of-the-art technology and defense solutions to the Spanish Navy as well as to our international clients. Our collaboration has been and continues to be pivotal in elevating our common products to the forefront of technology. What’s Next

The F-110 will soon join the Spanish Navy’s family of frigates. With the first two ships already in the construction phase, Lockheed Martin and Navantia have major upcoming milestones, including tracking live objects with AN/SPY-7(v)2 radar at Lockheed Martin’s Aegis-SCOMBA Integration Center in Moorestown, New Jersey. The integration of the Aegis and SCOMBA Combat System tactical computer programs will also take place at ASIC and Navantia’s land-based test site in San Fernando, Spain. Both milestones will continue to demonstrate the F-110 program is on track for the first frigate to be commissioned in 2028.

The current agreement focuses on opportunities in warships and naval combat systems. Progress on the construction of the F-110 frigates and S-80 submarines for the Spanish Navy is propelling this collaboration to new heights.

Lockheed Martin’s partnerships in Spain and across the world result in millions of dollars being invested in its global supply chain, creating local security and strengthening their economies, industries and communities.
