Ministerial meeting of Libya's neighbours begins in Algiers

ALGIERS- The ministerial meeting of Libya's neighbouring countries started Monday, in Algiers, with the aim of helping Libyans achieve the national reconciliation process, mainly through the general elections scheduled for 24 December 2021.

The foreign ministers of Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Niger, Chad, Sudan and the Republic of Congo are taking part in the meeting, chaired by Algeria's minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Ramtane Lamamra.

The participants also include representatives of three international and regional organizations, such as the secretary general of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the commissioner of the African Union for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, and UN chief's special envoy for Libya, Jan Kubis.
The opening address of Lamamra will be followed by a presentation by Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al-Manqoush on the preparations for the general elections, due to be held in December.

The UN envoy is expected to make a presentation on the latest developments in Libya and the process of implementing the recommendations of the Berlin 2 Conference.
The meeting, being held in camera, will discuss a road map for the next elections to end the transitional period in that country, while disagreements persist between Libyan belligerents on the legal basis that should govern the organization of the elections.
"A roadmap is on the agenda, and we are in Algeria to review the situation in Libya and the possibility of helping the Libyan brothers and sisters in order to go towards the implementation of the roadmap and converge on the appropriate means to reach these deadlines," the head of the Tunisian diplomacy, Othman Jerandi, said at the end of his meeting with Mr. Lamamra Sunday in Algiers.
