Switzerland blocked Denmark from donating the aging Piranha 3 to Ukraine. Instead, all indications are that Germany bought them and just delivered the first three to Moldova's army as part of a larger donation. This is reported by the Ministry of Defense of Moldova and the defense media defbrief.

INApril OLFI could reveal that Denmark would donate approx. 25 aging armored personnel carriers (PMV) of the Piranha 3 type for Ukraine. It later emerged that Switzerland would not allow the donation because the armored personnel carriers are produced by Swiss Mowag and that the Alpine country does not allow resale or donation to warring nations. The Danish Piranhas were otherwise spotted on block trucks in Poland on their way to Ukraine.

What happened after that has remained in the dark, because the Ministry of Defense has blacked out all Danish donations to Ukraine. This week, the defense media Defbrief was able to report that Germany has handed over the first three Piranhas to Moldova as part of a larger donation, and the Piranhas in question were supposed to be Danish.

"It is worth mentioning that the vehicles previously belonged to the Danish army and that they were bought by Germany for Moldova. It remains unclear whether the vehicles handed over to Moldova are the same ones that Denmark planned to donate to Ukraine and that Switzerland blocked," writes Defbrief.

On the website of the Ministry of Defense of Moldova, you can also read about the donation from Germany, which was celebrated with a ceremony Military Camp 142 in the capital Chisinau on Thursday. According to the Ministry of Defense of Moldova, the total donation consists of 19 Piranha 3, which will be continuously delivered through 2023.

"This supply of equipment will replace the army's aging vehicles with new ones. The PMVs received will be handed over to "22. "Blue Helmets" peacekeeping battalion for the purpose of training," says Moldova's Defense Minister, Anatolie Nosatli.
