When the Royal Moroccan Air Force bombed the bases of the Polisario mercenaries in northern Mali twice, in 1977 and 1987

Today the topic will be about one of the rare operations carried out by the Royal Moroccan Air Force in the desert war against the mercenaries of the Polisario, including the bombing of mercenaries' supply bases in northern Mali twice in 1977 and 1987.

The first operation: the July 1977 raid in northern Mali:

The mercenaries were using northern Mali as a rear base for them to cross towards Mauritania, providing supplies and fleeing to Tindouf.
After the mercenaries carried out repeated attacks against Mauritania in June 1977, the General Command of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces issued an order in Rabat to respond by carrying out an air operation against mercenaries in northern Mali, and the United States of America launched By providing intelligence support via satellite, one of the mercenary supply bases was identified in Mali. four American F-5s were equipped with two AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, fuel tanks and five American MK-82 bombs.

the three fighters (the fourth did not take off due to a technical malfunction) took off from Guelmim airport with a modified Gulfstream II transport plane to carry out air missions, which Colonel Kabbaj was on board, after it was refueled at Smara Airport, and the three F-5 fighters carried out the mission In northern Mali, the mercenary supply base was destroyed in northern Mali, and this raid was highly accurate.

The second operation: a raid in 1987

, based on the intelligence provided by America to the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, a new supply base was identified in northern Mali, which the mercenaries reconstructed ten years after its destruction, Mirage F1 EH fighters that were refueled by air from The party of Boeing 707 aircraft modified to become Tanker attacked the mercenary supply base and the mission was successfully carried out.

Without losing a single soldier, Morocco was able with drones to liquidate and kill most of the field leaders of the Polisario mercenaries in just two years

since November 13, 2020, after the Guergarat operation carried out by the Moroccan army to cleanse the buffer zone, the Polisario mercenaries announced the end of the ceasefire and the return of what they called war with Morocco.

Morocco during this period mostly used drones without moving or losing a single soldier, and was able to liquidate most of the prominent field leaders in the Polisario mercenaries

, commander of the so-called seventh region and advisor to Ibrahim Ghali. He was seriously wounded in the bombing of Al-Dah Al-Bandir and died after weeks of targeting due to his wounds. He always threatened to easily penetrate the wall and carry out terrorist operations in Moroccan cities.

The following is the death toll of the prominent leaders who were leaked Their names and their ranks after the destruction:

* the targeting of Dah al-Bandir was among the most prominent operations known to the Moroccan drones. Several mercenaries got killed, and it also reported that Polisario leader Ibrahim Ghali was injured in this process and the Algerian regime was forced to send him secretly to Spain in order to save his life.'

* Hamo Malo, commander of the so-called seventh region and advisor to Ibrahim Ghali. He was seriously wounded in the bombing of Al-Dah Al-Bandir and died after weeks of targeting due to his wounds. He always threatened to easily penetrate the wall and carry out terrorist operations in Moroccan cities.

POLISARIO K 3.jpg

* Salem Shaddad , the most dangerous leader in the Polisario mercenaries, and the leader of the so-called special forces.. Algeria spent huge amounts of money on him to train him during the past decades in Cuba, Venezuela, and Gaddafi’s Thunderbolt Forces and Syria in order to carry out terrorist operations against Morocco. He was killed by A Moroccan warplane march, as his attempt to enter the buffer zone coincided with the end of the Twizaki military operation in April 2021, in which Morocco built a new security wall to abolish the buffer zone and attached the wall to the Algerian border.

Najim Ould Al-Diya, This leader is responsible for the military coordination between the Polisario mercenaries and the Algerian army (a picture of him with Chanegriha (Chief of Staff of the Algerian National Army). He was killed shortly before the announcement of Salem Shaddad’s killing in April 2021, accompanied by a number of mercenaries.

It should be noted that this list is not final,
but there is a much larger number of leaders in this list who were liquidated without
fanfare without talking about the huge number of the buried Polisario mercenaries, and thus Morocco has succeeded in liquidating the most prominent leaders of this terrorist organization only through marches and Without losing a single soldier,

Moroccan Cobra Early Warning Center

The Moroccan Cobra Ground Early Warning Center is located in the first royal air base underground in a way that makes it capable of withstanding nuclear attacks. It was actually established in 1980 by the American company Westinghouse to be merged directly with the National Air Defense Center, which was established by the same company in 1977, initially collected The primary radars are a single defensive network problem for the early detection of air threats, to be added after that, AN/TPS 63 radars, which expanded the area of early monitoring of the atmosphere and coasts

MOROCCO NETWORK 1.jpg

In the year 2000, the system got its second development. The development also included the creation of a program similar to artificial intelligence created by Moroccan computer engineers under the name LOAD, which works to identify and sort air threats according to their severity and provide the best solutions to intercept and neutralize them, as Westinghouse company and at the end of The same year, a comprehensive development of the command and control systems was developed. The third development was only in 2010 with the participation of Northrop Grumman, where the command and control systems were completely changed and new long-range radars were added, as well as the IFF system and the introduction of a new artificial intelligence to the center that made it more responsive to new threats potential

The Cobra Center is constantly coordinating with the National Center for Air Defense DCA and the National Center for Security and Air Control to ensure greater operability between the various units involved in neutralizing the air threat and to ensure more effective coverage. The system combines both city and military radars, which makes it cover A wide area outside Moroccan airspace and can deal with any form of threats or air violations by fully coordinated guidance between fighters and air defense systems, including air defense systems for naval vessels from long distances with the ability to control and command in a field The battlefield, as the system can also be used in offensive operations, and the system allows to distinguish between hundreds of friendly and hostile aircraft from thousands of kilometers away, relying on a network of monitoring radars, air defense, early warning radars, and even civilian radars.

RADAR 1.png RADAR 2.jpg

The center is divided into 3 sections, a section for monitoring, tracking and coordination, a section for determining the field of intervention against the air threat, and a section for electronic warfare.
A comprehensive development of the system will be carried out during this year ( 2020) , as is done periodically every ten years, and during the past two years Chinese air defense systems have been successfully integrated for the first time with the center, which was officially announced during the Marrakesh International Air and Defense Exhibition. Air defense deals with China as they comply with the standards required in the Cobra Center for the success of the integration process, which cannot be achieved with Russian systems, for example.

The last pictures is pictures of the DCA, the National Air Defense Center. To this day we only have photos of the underground entrance of the Cobra, and documented information only from sources in the eighties.

I have mentioned a few points regarding the Cobra early warning center as well as National Center for Air Defense/ DCA.

The SIC, SIGT, SICOB and SICO systems developed by the Moroccan army

Three innovative computer projects were realized internally by the Informatics Development Team of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, which adds a high value to the training and operation of the Moroccan Armored Corps.

The SIC

The sic system is a integrated information and communications system was created to meet the practical requirements of the 2nd Armored Brigade .
in an intervention by Captain Younes Ghafiri From the armored training center dedicated to the integrated information and communications system (SIC), where he said that this system was successfully tested during the “Tafilalet 2018” maneuvers with specific operational requirements, especially with regard to sharing real-time data needed for quick field decisions
It also allows to improve the capabilities of leadership, control and early warning, as well as planning in conducting accurate operations. This system adds the captain enhances synergy and coordination of actions to effectively achieve field operational objectives. Technically, this system integrates the map system, and allows GPS determination of geographical location

The SIGT air support

The sight system, which is a ground information system developed above NATO standards, is the result of joint efforts between elements from the Armored Training Center and elements from the second air base in Meknes. It was presented by Lieutenant Anas Aouragh, who said that the system is a purely Moroccan development. To facilitate CAS = Close Air Support
, the SIGT system in its updated version allows integrating a tactical engine that accurately calculates the movement of fighters and simulates their movement during the provision of close air support and also creates a safety circle for ground forces .. The system also facilitates filling and displaying information in a precise way.

SICOB Virtual Reality System for Training

This system, which was presented by Commander "Al-Muhtadee Billah Al-Omari" from the General Inspectorate of the Armored Corps
, provides basic functions in a new way for the novice units in the armored brigades. This system was developed by the Research and Development Unit of the Armored Training Center in Meknes, which A combat simulator was designed and developed, and it was presented for the first time 3 years ago( 2015) with an initial version, and now the second version of it is reached this year ( 2020), as this version has been improved and adapted to better meet operational needs, and this was evident when the system was successfully tested during the "Tafilalet 2018" maneuvers. .
This achievement, in its second version, refers to the transition from a normal simulator program to an integrated innovative device so that this system generates single and double scenarios and integrates the main equipment of various special weapons, as well as providing tactical and technical training on a wide range of military armored vehicles in a triple virtual space Dimensions, but it is designed and programmed in a very realistic way, taking into account the smallest details, as a great effort has been made to develop the physical and dynamic characteristics of each weapon and armored vehicle separately, and even the environmental atmosphere, vegetation and hydrographic cover, for example.. And the leader adds in the conclusion of his intervention that The program is a major step in improving the operational capabilities of entry-level armored units.'

SICO

The Moroccan Air Defense DAT conducted a military exercise under the name DATEX that brought together the RMA, the RMAF, and the Royal Navy RMN with the aim of raising the combat readiness of the Moroccan air defense network, in which the three branches intervene through a complex scenario that includes intervention and coordinated dealing against vital targets. Including terrorist targets attacking with booby-trapped drones and cruise missiles with the active participation of the developed and innovative SICO system with local competencies, which was integrated within the command and control system so that it sends and receives orders directly to the intervening units and coordinates between the higher command and the operations center and displays various situations Tactical forces and units. To counter this threat, units of air defense batteries, fighters of the Royal Air Force and parts of the Royal Navy have been deployed and activated.
In the technological development of the military field, the SICO project provides the ability to obtain, process, and use information on the battlefield, and allows unit commands to obtain an overview of the battlefield to help them decide on the appropriate intervention in the form of artificial intelligence. New technology is used in the SICO system, along with the interoperability capabilities developed by the competencies of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, where its first version was released in 2017, to be crowned in 2019 with a more advanced and effective version that was tested during the exercise.

Specialized only in air threats (coordinates between the Air Force, Air Defense and Radars) DAT = Cobra + DCA
SICO A home-made system integrating with the command and control system to create intervention scenarios and enhance coordination between the various units of the army land, sea and
air.

The systems are all invented from scratch locally, and not developed from an open source.

Moroccan armed forces (March and September 2020)

All the systems I have mentioned is compatible with the cobra center, and the network structure of the Moroccan armed forces will be fully matured with the arrival of the f16 vipers, apache AH64-E and the G500 ISR /SIGINT Aircrafts. We can therefore expect that the network will be matured by 2025.

I don't get the complete picture. The first post is about the Cobra early warning system and then Morocco's army SIC integrated information system . Don't really get where all of this are integrated into a single C4ISR system. Maybe I'm missing something?

For example Indonesia contracted Scytalis to develop this and integrate all of Indonesia's all branches command and control (Navy, AF, Army) into a single network allowing Indonesia's diverse assets with different TDL in the air land and sea to act as sensors node+communicate and increase the overall situational awareness hence reduced reaction time.

The system, which SCYTALYS undertakes to implement and deliver within a 3-year time frame, includes the following elements:

  • Design and development of the Indonesian National Data Link system
  • Design and development of a centralized state-of-the-art C4ISR system and related new facilities, synthesizing the Common Operational Picture and increasing Situational Awareness
  • Integration of Command Centers from all branches (Army, Navy and Air Force) to the C4ISR system
  • Design and development of an integrated remote Surveillance and Monitoring system, further enhancing the Situational Awareness and Interoperability.

Probably the most ambitious of this integrating effort is the US JADC2 initiative. Promising to shorten the time to react between sensors and shooters across all domain in the joint forces.
JADC2 is so advanced last year it was used successfully to direct an army paladin howitzer unit to shoot a USAF target cruise missile.

The exercise played out with old and new sensors tracking a BQM-167 cruise missile, fired by USAF bombers posing as enemy aircraft, over White Sands Missile Range, N.M. The sensors fed into the real-time nerve center, where Airmen in the service’s new 13 Oscar Air Force Specialty Code gave the order for an Army Paladin Howitzer to fire the new Strategic Capabilities Office-developed Hyper Velocity Gun Weapon System, downing a cruise missile for the first time.

Does Morocco has anything like this ongoing in the military?

The Structure of the C4I is disclosed, unfortunately. You have probably realized that a lot of contracts and projects that take place within the armed forces almost always get revealed years after. I hope you don't take it as an "Excuse" for hidden failures to provide any source. According to some credible Moroccan leakers, the C4I structure was set up years prior to 2020. Almost all of the deals that are executed tend to come out to the public later, some of the deals were Viper/ Apache/ TB2, as well as all the Chinese air defense systems that got known to the public this s year after satellite images were shown. No one really knows which ammunition the m1 abrams tanks use because it has never been disclosed by DSCA. The closest source that I could find would be the following deal that colsa corp got awarded with in 2018.

COLSA Corp., Huntsville, Alabama, has been awarded a $69,618,375 modification (P00039) to contract FA2486-16-F-0031 for Technical and Management Advisory Services Command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (C4ISR)/cyber support. This modification involves foreign military sales to Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Egypt, Finland, France, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Korea, Morocco, NATO, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom.

During the past three days, the terrorist in the Polisario mercenaries known as "Salem Haidar", a field leader, was eliminated, accompanied by more than ten mercenaries who tried to approach the buffer zone. Drones are doing a well job for us in the sahara,

photo published by the mercenaries of the Polisario shows the corpses of the militants as they tried to approach the buffer zone.

One thing I noticed: lack of dedicated IFV hence improvised fighting vehicles are used.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of General Dynamics announced the imminent announcement of a large deal with Morocco and Spain related to combat vehicles
. Pete Skibitski -- Alembic Global Advisors -- Analyst OK. And just -- I've lost track of this. But the big Spanish and Morocco combat vehicle programs , when do you expect to have those under contract, if they're not yet? Phebe Novakovic -- Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Well, I have learned not to speculate on the timing of sovereign governments' decisions. But I will tell you that we're going to get this ( Q2 2020)

First batch of the Piranha to the Spanish armed forces will be 348 vehicles, and the total amount of vehicles could exceed 1 000 units. Morocco also got offered the GTK Boxer by Germany, and also reported that other countries like brazil participated in the tender.

BOXER.jpg

After other details about the Moroccan IFV program
, it is related to a program presented by several companies, and it seems that General Dynamics won the deal.

Not all systems in this picture is in the inventory, but most of them are. This network is already in progress, and the merging of both western weapon systems, and Chinese are within the same system of the cobra system. We can expect this system to fully materialize within the next 2-3 years when all the systems have been delivered as the apaches, vipers, and the ISR planes.

Is this for real or just in planning stage? What defense contractors got the job to integrate these C4ISR ?
Concerning C4ISR In the moroccan army:

. The systems have been gradually developed from C2ISR to C4ISR since 2008 before he was even heard of and recently appeared in the 2018 Sagro maneuvers, and one of the most important part of the C4ISR Structure is the US Link16 or Link11.

If I remember there was a contract with the US for the modernisation Of the C4ISR Structure In morocco and that included supply of modern Communcation systems and Situational awarness between FAR army units.

Unfortunately information About C4ISR is considered a secret yet the Moroccan applies Nato standards for linking with army Units.

I heard that the structure was in full functioning during the 2014-2015 period, so now it makes more sense when you mentioned the 2018 sagro maneuvers. Do we have any pictures of the sagro event taking place?

Wasn't Morocco initially interested on the Atak ?
Yes, it was different sources claiming that morocco has been in negotiation since 2018, while reportedly being in late negotiations in 2021. However, no news has emerged since, perhaps because of the engine issue. The tender I posted now is more related to transport helicopters, but it's also possible that Morocco would go for a light attack variant just like the Blackhawk. Time will show :)
