An additional batch of Bayraktar TB2 was ordered in December 2020​

Ameeting between the Command of the Ukrainian Navy and the management of the Turkish company Baykar Defense, which produces reconnaissance and strike UAVs Bayraktar TB2, took place in Odessa. An additional batch of these drones was ordered by the Ministry of Defense at the end of 2020 .
As Defense Express is known, there are a total of five complexes , each of which consists of two or three UAVs and a control station. Some of these complexes will expand the existing fleet of the Air Force, and others are designed to strengthen the Ukrainian Navy.

During the presentation, Baykar Defense CEO Haluk Bayraktar presented the real capabilities of the Bayraktar TB2 reconnaissance and strike UAV. During the event, the methodology and analysis of the use of drones in combat operations were discussed.

In particular, in Nagorno-Karabakh, during which almost 1,000 targets worth $ 1.9 billion were destroyed with the help of Bayraktar TB2 .

For the Ukrainian Navy, the capabilities of the Bayraktar TB2 are now one of the key ones. It should close the gap in modern air reconnaissance in the seas. Moreover, this UAV is most likely considered as one of the components of determining the coordinates of targets for guidance of the RK-360MC coastal missile system from DKKB "Luch".

At the same time, Bayraktar TB2 is constantly involved in sea missions in Turkey. Thanks to its powerful optical-aiming station, it can capture ships at a distance of tens of kilometers and determine their coordinates, which can be transmitted online to "Neptune".

In addition to this quite logical use, Bayraktar TB2 can be considered as an effective means of anti-sabotage defense. But the Turkish drone can have much greater opportunities for real combat use.

For example, it is possible to borrow the experience of China, which practiced a strike on the ship with MLRS. At the beginning of the year, a video of the results of covering a naval target with a volley from a 300-mm PHL-03A system hit the network.

Especially considering that the common "Achilles' heel" of many Russian ships, which is constantly talked about in Russia, is the lack of adequate air defense.

For example, the small missile ships of project 21631 "Buyan-M" (4 ships out of 9 are based in the Black Sea) have only the "Flexible" complex with air defense means.

This SAM is actually a small in size and capabilities complex with missiles from PZKR - "Willow" or "Needle". That is, it cannot shoot down targets that fly higher than 3.5 km. We will add that this complex is also developed in a land variant.

Corvettes (patrol ships) of project 22160, which are specially built for the Black Sea, received the same armament (out of 6 planned - 3 in service).

Also helpless against Bayraktar TB2 are a number of old Russian ships with SAM "Osa-M", which has significant restrictions on altitude up to 5 km. These are five small anti-submarine ships of the 1124M Albatross project and two missile projects of the 1239 Sivuch project.

At the same time, the missile boats of the "Lightning" project (four units in service) are armed with "Kortyk", which operates only up to 3.5 km in height.

Slightly more adequate armament in the project 22800 "Karakurt" (planned for the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation 5 ships from 2021 to 2023), which received "Armor". However, the real "zero" combat effectiveness of this SAM against Bayraktar TB2 has already been tested in Syria and Libya.

Of course, the capabilities of the main weapon Bayraktar TB2 - MAM-L, which weighs about 24 kg with a warhead of 10 kg, is critically small to sink warships.

But the MAM-L's high-precision capabilities make it possible to disable the ship's radar systems, demolish the bridge or hit missile launchers. Any of this will lead to the breakdown of the enemy ship and its long-term repair.

The threat of such a scenario is likely to force the use of these ships only in conjunction with ships equipped with more powerful SAM. For example, the frigates of the project 11356R / 1135 "Petrel" with SAM "Stil-1", which uses an upgraded missile from "Buk" with a range of up to 50 km range and 15 km altitude.

However, this significantly "restricts" the capabilities of the Russian Black Sea Fleet in maneuver and actually turns expensive ships into "coastal" launchers of cruise missiles "Caliber".

We should remind that now the possibility of deployment of Bayraktar TB2 production in the territory of Ukraine, with possible transfer of technologies is considered.
