These are all great news. I have been hearing these type of possible discoveries and potential production numbers since 1960s. So please excuse me if I sound a bit of a sceptic. But I will believe it when I see it.
Turkey needs just over 1million barrels of oil very day (1004 thousand barrels to be exact) to be drilled out of the ground to meet it’s daily usage.


So this 70thousand barrels a day production is a small fraction (just under 7%) of our daily needs. It is true that every little bit helps. But it is far from to really make a difference.
For a country with seas on all three sides of us where wind farms can be established; For a country that has sooo much sun all year round where huge numbers of photovoltaic cell panels can be erected; We are not doing enough.
Just check out UK renewable energy production levels ; They have reached 47.8% of their total energy production. (This is a country that produces oil and natural gas and has huge coal reserves)


In comparison, Germany has 75% of its energy generated from fossil fuels. 16% renewable sources and 6% nuclear. Even though it is very large numbers in actual megawatts, it is still not satisfactory for the large amounts of energy Germany consumes.


To depend on fossil fuels for our energy needs is the wrong route to follow. It gives me great pleasure to see the increasing wind turbine numbers every time I fly over Turkish landscape. But there should be more government incentives and investments for enlargement of the wind based energy production. I can see more and more of our south facing slopes being filled with photovoltaic cell panels. But for a developing economy and industry like ours the numbers are still minuscule . There should be more state intervention and incentives.

The average crude oil production of Turkey in the period 2000-2020 has been around 60000 barrels a day. There have been times when it has reached 4.4 million tons a year. A barrel of oil is 136kg in weight. So in 1991 Turkish oil production has hit 140000 barrels a day average. That is double of 70000 barrels TPAO is boasting about today. (That is probably TPAO’s own record. Not Turkey’s)

Türkiye needs to eliminate the use of natural gas in power generation. This can be done as nuclear power comes online and renewables grow bigger. Even wave energy is in the works. There is a healthy progress.

We need to raise the share of wind and solar more. And then we can reduce natural gas-electricity production.

In my thinking,

- Short term: diversify the energy sources and go cleaner and cleaner. Local part and platform manufacturing is essential to grow healthily and sustainably.

- Long term: design and build mini(or micro) nuclear reactors. Once you have a product, try to establish the economies of scale and build hundreds of them to make them competitive. Depending on our technological readiness, these could either be PWR or MSR. If the latter is beyond our reach, we shouldn't waste time by not researching and building the former. Energy security and independence is paramount. We should pour adequate resources to these fields to reap the benefits later.

Can the members with the knowledge refer some papers that delineate our knowledge base and capabilities in nuclear research?

%ge use of Oil?? Something not quite correct there?? That must be figures for electricity production only!
Turkey consumed 246 million barrels of imported crude oil in 2022, in addition to 29 million barrels of locally produced crude oil, according to official data. That makes 275 million barrels.
In 2022 average oil price was ~100$ per barrel. That means we spent 27.5 billion dollars on oil.
In 2022 Turkey’s total energy import bill was around 100 billion dollars.
So for starters 27% of all energy went for oil, which is not renewable!
Then there is gas, and coal as well.

Rolls-Royce, EUAS International ICC to coop. in SMRs​

Rolls-Royce and Turkey’s EUAS International ICC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to carry out a study to evaluate both the technical, economical and legal applicability; and also the possibility of joint production of compact nuclear power stations (aka SMR) to underpin clean economic growth.

This announcement will help the provision of low carbon energy systems and marks an exciting new chapter in the strong relationship between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Turkey.

The agreement, which Rolls-Royce has signed in its role as a member of a consortium designing this power station, commits to a study that will look at the technical, licensing, commercial and investment cases for the deployment of the consortium’s power station; potential construction processes; and market potential in Turkey and globally.

The consortium which is designing the power station comprises Assystem, Atkins, BAM Nuttall, Laing O’Rourke, National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), Rolls-Royce, Jacobs, The Welding Institute (TWI) and Nuclear AMRC.

David Orr, consortium director, Rolls-Royce, said: “Addressing climate change is not only our planet’s most pressing long term challenge but also can be a crucial economic opportunity. Our power station is affordable, fast to deploy and is an attractive investment that will stimulate tens of thousands of jobs regionally and embed prosperity and quality of life for decades to come. Turkey’s domestic and regional nuclear power opportunities are incredibly exciting, and we look forward to exploring how our consortium’s power station will support its energy, economic and industrial ambitions.”

Yahya Yılmaz Bayraktarlı, CEO, EUAS International ICC, stated, “Our vision is to diversify electricity resources with nuclear power. We aim to develop a sustainable nuclear industry, which contributes to economic growth and social wealth of the country. Turkey already develops nuclear power plants of larger scale with its international partners. Competitiveness in price is an important indicator for us. The feasibility of small modular reactors is a research and development issue we continuously monitor.”

Components for compact power station will be manufactured in standardised sections in factories, before being transported to sites for rapid assembly inside a weatherproof canopy. This cuts costs by avoiding weather disruptions, provides excellent conditions for workers and secures incremental efficiency savings by using streamlined and advanced manufacturing processes for its components.

The result is lower upfront costs, and a faster, predictable construction and commissioning periods.

Collaboration between Turkey’s energy sector and Rolls-Royce has been active since 2013 when a joint supply chain study was undertaken with the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Turkey and Istanbul Technical University.

This new agreement will see phased collaboration during the next two years.

Elektrik Üretim AŞ establishes a new company with the title of "EUAS International"

The Presidential Decision on the subject was published in the Official Gazette.

Accordingly, the capital amount for Ankara-based EUAS International, to be established by EÜAŞ as the controlling shareholder, with 150 million nominal shares, each worth 1 dollar, was determined as 2 billion 195 million 565 thousand liras.

In the decision, it was stated that the capital size was calculated on the dollar exchange rate dated March 31.


Let's wait and see what they cook.

We have exceeded 40% in renewables for electricity generation and we are doing just fine. With the incentive structures in place the share of renewables will go up very fast in the coming years as well. However, renewables need to be backed with either nuclear or fossil, preferably nuclear. We will probably be phasing out imported coal first as nuclear comes online.

Also, electricity generation is about 1/3 of natural gas consumption and a small part of oil consumption. We have about 2 to 3 decades in which oil and natural gas will stay important and the recent finds will contribute hundreds of billion dollars to the economy in that time period.

SMR of Rolls-Royce is rated at 470 MWe. That's too big for what I have in mind. Even A4W that's powering USS Abraham Lincoln is too big.

It should, ideally, be on the order of 100MWe or smaller. We should be able to churn it out in a normal size factory and ship it in big numbers. Passive safety features, easy and fast installation and no requirement of trained operators combined with economies of scale would be revolutionary.

I strongly believe that the future is SMR or nuclear microreactors. Renewables will only serve to be a transitional period.

Solar at 4.7% is bad, way to low.
if I remember correctly Turkey only started to produce the key components that go into Solar panels somewhere between 2019 to 2021, which is why the government only recently started to increase support to the solar industry.

A new oil discovery is reported at Mereto Mountain in Batman province near Sason. Early data proves the existence of 25-30 API oil in the area and studies continue to find out how much oil is there.

TPIC (Turkish Petroleum Internation Company) a subsidiary of TPAO discovered oil after finding a trace amount of oil in the Heybeli-1 well which is located on the outskirts of Mereto Mountain. Later experts decided to drill another exploration well with the data gathered from the Heybeli-1 well and made the discovery.

Fuel has now gone up by 6 liras.

This means that from tomorrow, everything from needle to thread will go up.

Netanyahu is expected to visit Ankara in the following months to discuss several subjects. The main subject of the visit will be a gas pipeline that will connect Israeli gas fields to Turkiye.

That's the real issue for this pipeline. Turkey doesn't recognize South Cyprus. Cyprus and Israel doesn't recognize Northern Cyprus. You either pass through Cypriot or Syrian EEZ. As Syria is a non starter, how does this work? Do we push for North Cypriot recognition, recognize South Cyprus in return? That is one tall order. Almost makes East Med more believable to be honest.
