MOSCOW ($1=59.50 Russian Rubles) — The Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile enters serial production. This was announced by the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu, on August 20. Shoigu spoke at the international arms forum being held in Moscow Army-2022. He said the serial production of the Tsirkon hypersonic missile has already been “documented”. “We actually put it into operation,” Shoigu said. In addition to Tsirkon, the serial production of another key missile – Kinzhal – is currently underway.

In early August, some Chinese media called Tsirkon an “absolute weapon”. According to reports in state-run Chinese media, Tsirkon is a major trump card of Russian President Vladimir Putin. They [Chinese media] call Tsirkon “virtually invulnerable to air defense systems”. Some go further in their comments, claiming that a Tsirkon attack could sink a US aircraft carrier within 30 minutes.

Analysts say that one of the first weapons systems to be armed with Tsirkon is the nuclear-powered Yasen-M class submarine – Krasnoyarsk. Krasnoyarsk is now officially launched. The American online portal 19FortyFive writes that Krasnoyarsk can oppose any American submarine at the moment. Krasnoyarsk is a stealth submarine and is said to be one of the first to be armed with the 3M22 Tsirkon hypersonic anti-ship missile.

The last successful test of the Tsirkon hypersonic missile was on December 24, 2021. Then the Russian president was quick to declare that this missile and this test were a “big event” in the life of Russia. Putin also said that Tsirkon is a step in improving the security and defense capabilities of the Russian Federation.

According to information available in open sources, the Tsirkon hypersonic missile has a range of just over 1,000 km. It is powered by an engine that provides its own thrust throughout the flight route. Sources say it is the world’s first cruise missile that can perform aerodynamic maneuvering flight in dense layers of the atmosphere. According to the previously released characteristics, the flight speed of the Tsirkon is above Mach 9.
