Modernized Russian Frigate Fires New Artillery Systems in Sea of Japan

Project 1155 frigate (via Twitter)

The Russian Pacific Fleet’s Marshal Shaposhnikov modernized frigate has fired new artillery systems Peter the Great Gulf, the largest gulf of the Sea of Japan.
“The frigate successfully launched an anti-ship cruise missile of the Uranium complex against a towed sea shield. For the first time, a complex of artillery fires at air and sea targets was carried out in the Peter the Great Bay.

Targets were fired from the A-190 universal shipborne artillery mount, which the ship received in the course of modernization, and the AK-630 30-mm six-barreled automatic artillery mounts. Torpedo armament tested,” the Russian Ministry of Defense announced Monday.

The Marshal Shaposhnikov entered service with the Russian Navy as a large anti-submarine warfare ship. The ship’s repairs with its upgrade are underway at the Dalzavod Ship Repair Center in Vladivostok in the Russian Far East. Shipbuilders repaired the frigate’s sea valves and hull structures and installed new equipment.

In addition to anti-submarine warfare and air defense capabilities, the frigate received Kalibr-NK, Oniks and Uran cruise missile launchers and advanced artillery armament. It will soon get Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. Following the upgrade of the Marshal Shaposhnikov, all seven Project 1155 ships are slated for modernization.

Not in the case of the US, most russian vessels are lesser armed, with the exception of the Kirov's all Russian warships have less VLS than the US and iirc they don't have quad pack ability for certain type of missile's.

Even when the Constellation (FFG-X) will enter service it will (depend on the type of loadout ) could carry more punch than let's say a Slava class cruiser, because it's MK-41 VlS are designed to launch a broad type of munition from quad packed ESSM, Tomahawks, LRASM

32 VLS could be divided by half for a mix of 64 SAM (quad packed)+ 16 VL LRASM, add this to the 16 canister launched Harpoons or NSM and indeed it carries more stick (not to be confused with warheads tho).

Twenty years ago, on August 12, 2000, the Russian submarine K-141 Kursk sank in the Barents Sea, north of Russia, due to two explosions during a military exercise.

Most of the crew died shortly after the explosion, while at least 23 officers and sailors died of asphyxiation hours after the submarine Kursk sank to the bottom of the sea, over 100 meters deep and about 150 kilometers from the base of Severomorsk, Russia.

The K-141 Kursk was an Oscar-class nuclear-powered submarine of the Northern Fleet, which entered service at Severomorsk in 1995, capable of carrying and launching nuclear-warhead missiles.

On 12 August, the submarine was engaged in a military naval exercise in the Barents Sea where it was supposed to launch torpedoes from exercise (without explosive charge) against the nuclear cruiser, class Kirov, Pjotr Velikij.

At 11:28 local time, test torpedoes were launched, but soon after, there was an explosion, presumably of one of the Kursk torpedoes, inside or near the submarine. Due to the hull injuries caused by the explosion, the submarine settled on the bottom at a depth of 108 meters. A second explosion occurred within the hull 135 seconds after the first.

The questions. Still today we do not know how many were the crew members and how long some of them survived in the submarine.

Video Exercise of naval aviation and crews of DBK "Ball" was held at the Black Sea Fleet. The joint forces discovered and destroyed a mock enemy surface ship with a group of saboteurs on board.

First, a group of aircraft, which was launched into the air, consisting of Su-30SM fighters and Su-24M bombers, inflicted conditional missile and bomb attacks on the detected target. Then the ship was taken to be escorted by coastal artillery. The installations of the Bal ballistic missile system were brought into action and carried out electronic missile launches at a given target.

The original Project 22350 serial-produced warships built at the Severnaya Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) carry two versatile shipborne launchers each

1613480586694.png

MOSCOW, February 16. /TASS/. The improved Project 22350 frigates Admiral Amelko and Admiral Chichagov will become the carriers of hypersonic weapons and will be capable of carrying 32 cruise missiles each, a source in the domestic shipbuilding industry told TASS on Tuesday.

"The pair [the frigates Admiral Amelko and Admiral Chichagov] will be capable of accomplishing the tasks that standard serial-produced ships of this series fulfil. They will carry a larger ammunition load. A possibility is available for installing hypersonic weapons," the source said.

"Under the contract, they will carry four versatile shipborne launchers each and this series of ships will be continued. Each launcher is designed for eight Kalibr-NK and/or Oniks cruise missiles and, eventually, for Tsirkon [hypersonic] weapons," the source said.

TASS has no official confirmation of this information yet.

The original Project 22350 serial-produced warships built at the Severnaya Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) carry two versatile shipborne launchers each. The Russian Navy is currently using the Project 22350 lead frigate Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov for testing Tsirkon hypersonic weapons.

The frigate Admiral Gorshkov test-launched a Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile for the first time in early October 2020. The missile launched from the White Sea struck a sea target in the Barents Sea. The Tsirkon developed a speed of Mach 8 and climbed to an altitude of 28 km. The next test-launch took place in November 2020. A Tsirkon missile successfully struck a sea target at a distance of 450 km, developing a speed of over Mach 8.

Tsirkon hypersonic missile

In February 2011, then-Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Popovkin announced plans to develop the Tsirkon shipborne system with a hypersonic missile. According to media reports, the missile’s flight tests began in 2015.

In his State-of-the-Nation Address to the Federal Assembly in February 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the work on the Tsirkon hypersonic missile was proceeding as scheduled. As the Russian leader said, the Tsirkon was capable of developing a speed of about Mach 9 and its striking range capability could exceed 1,000 km. The Russian leader also said that the Tsirkon could strike both naval and ground targets. Putin specified at the time there were plans to deploy Tsirkon on serial-produced surface ships and submarines, including the warships built or under construction for Kalibr cruise missiles.

Russia uses the 3S-14 versatile shipborne launcher for the launches of Tsirkon hypersonic weapons and Kalibr cruise missiles. These launchers, in particular, are operational on Russian Navy Project 22350 frigates and Project 20380 corvettes.

The Russian Admiralty Shipyards (A member of United Shipbuilding Corporation) launched the third Project 636.3 (NATO: Improved Kilo-class) diesel electric submarine (SSK), Magadan, for the Russian Navy’s Pacific Fleet on March 26, 2021 in St. Petersburg. Magadan, the third submarine of the series being built at Admiralty Shipyards for the Pacific Fleet, was laid down on November 1, 2019. The first ship, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, was handed over to the Russian Navy on November 25, 2019. The Volkhov submarine, the second in the series, entered the Pacific Fleet on October 24, 2020. The launch of the fourth Ufa submarine is scheduled for the end of this year.

The contract for the construction of the series was signed in September 2016, which was a continuation of the implementation of the long-term plan of the Russian Ministry of Defense to restore the combat readiness of the country’s Navy and the program to improve diesel-electric submarines.

Overall, the Admiralty Shipyard (part of Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation) will build six Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines for Russia’s Pacific Fleet. The Admiralty Shipyard earlier constructed a series of six Project 636.3 submarines for the Black Sea Fleet. The Russian Navy Command is also considering building Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarines for the Baltic Fleet.

Project 636.3 submarines ‘Magadan’

Project 636.3 submarines (NATO reporting name: Improved Kilo-II) are 74 meters long and displace more than 3,900 tonnes. Due to its strong hull, the submarine has an operational depth of 240 meters and can dive to a maximum depth of 300 meters. Ship has an operational range of 400 miles when submerged and up to 7,500 miles with 7 knots speed. They are armed with Kalibr-PL cruise missiles that are launched from torpedo tubes from the sub’s submerged position. Project 636 submarines are considered among the world’s most noiseless submarines. They can develop a speed of up to 20 knots, have their sea endurance of 45 days, and a crew of 52 men.

Umka-2021 Arctic exercise of the Northern fleet showed a possibility of covert preparation and delivery of a massive strike by Russian SSBN, the Independent Military Review writes.

Naval News Staff 10 Apr 2021

Story by TASS Russian news agency

The previous surfacing through the Arctic ice demonstrated Russian Navy capabilities in mid-1990s. The Severstal SSBN of project 941 sailed to the North Pole, surfaced in the ice and test launched a missile.

In March 2021, three nuclear submarines simultaneously surfaced near Alexandra Island of Franz Joseph Land Archipelago. Two of them were Dolphin-class SSBN of project 667BDRM. The third one was the Knyaz Vladimir latest Borey-A-class SSBN of project 955A. The three submarines carried 48 ballistic missiles.

Open sources said each Bulava submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) has six to ten individually targeted reentry vehicles. Sineva SLBM has four to ten vehicles. It makes the total potential number of 480 reentry vehicles. The Independent Military Review estimated the three submarines carried 288 vehicles.

Russian Navy Commander Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov said the Arctic expedition comprised 43 events. It engaged over 600 military and civilian personnel and close to 200 arms and hardware. The expedition proceeded in a harsh weather with average temperature of minus 30 degrees Centigrade, over 1.5-meter thick ice, and wind of 32 m/sec.

He said the event was unprecedented for the Navy. Besides the surfacing of three SSBN, a pair of MiG-31 fighter jets flew over the North Pole and refueled in the air. One submarine fired a torpedo from under the ice. It was later found and extracted through an ice hole. The Arctic motorized rifle brigade held a tactical exercise in bad weather and in unknown terrain away from the main base.

The engaged arms and hardware confirmed the tactical and technical characteristics in high latitudes and low temperatures.

Sailing under the ice is a complicated training element. The ice is thick and sometimes reaches the seabed. It provides the highest secrecy level to submarines. The wake of a submerged submarine can be tracked by satellites, however ice makes it invisible for spacecraft.

The Arctic sorties of Russian SSBN confirmed the highest training level of the crews. The three submarines surfaced in parallel courses in a radius of 300 meters from each other.

1618056900333.png

Project 667BDRM submarines are third-generation SSBN and will remain the backbone of Russian maritime nuclear deterrence until the fourth-generation SSBN of project 955A with Bulava missiles become operational. The submarines joined the Navy in 1980s. There are six of them at present. The SSBN were upgraded in mid-2000s. The electronic equipment, radars, propeller-rudder system were replaced. The submarines were armed with new Sineva ballistic missiles.

Project 955A SSBN are armed with 16 Bulava SLBM. The Russian Navy currently operates the Yuri Dolgoruky, the Alexander Nevsky, and the Vladimir Monomakh SSBN of project 955 and the Knyaz Vladimir of upgraded project 955A. The Yuri Dolgoruky and the Knyaz Vladimir operate in the Northern fleet, while the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh in the Pacific fleet.

Sevmash Shipyard is building the Knyaz Oleg, the Generalissimo Suvorov, the Emperor Alexander III, and the Knyaz Pozharsky SSBN of project 955A. Another two submarines are to be laid in 2021.

The US Navy has numerously demonstrated the ability of covert Arctic missions in the framework of ICEX exercise, which also engaged UK submarines and Canadian Air Force.

The strategic nuclear-powered submarine Knyaz Vladimir “fully justifies its designation and no damage was registered upon its surfacing,”

The strategic missile-carrying submarine Knyaz Vladimir proved its worth in Arctic ice surfacing when three nuclear-powered subs simultaneously broke the 1.5-meter-thick ice, Russian Navy Chief Nikolai Yevmenov reported to Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Tuesday.

The nuclear-powered submarine Knyaz Vladimir “fully justifies its designation, and no damage was registered upon its surfacing,” the Russian Navy chief said.

The Russian defence minister heard the report by the Navy chief during an inspection of the military and social infrastructure of the nuclear-powered submarines’ base in the Gadzhiyevo garrison in the Murmansk Region, the Russian TASS agency reported.

In the course of an Arctic expedition in March 2021, three Russian nuclear-powered submarines concurrently surfaced in the Alexandra Land Island of the Franz Josef Land archipelago Arctic.

Two submarines were Project 667BDRM (Delfin-class) underwater cruisers, while the third vessel was the improved Project 955A (Borei-A) latest nuclear-powered submarine Knyaz Vladimir. The three subs carried a total of 48 submarine-launched ballistic missiles.

The Knyaz Vladimir is the improved Project 955A strategic missile-carrying underwater cruiser, which represents the fourth generation of nuclear-powered subs built for the Russian Navy. It was laid down at the Sevmash Shipyard on July 30, 2012, and floated out in November 2017.

Compared to the first three Borei-class subs (the Yuri Dolgoruky, the Alexander Nevsky, and the Vladimir Monomakh), the submarine Knyaz Vladimir is quieter. It features improved maneuvering, depth, and armament control systems.

The submarine Knyaz Vladimir entered service with the Russian Navy on June 12, 2020.

Naval Post Comment: The Arctic is increasingly viewed as an arena for geopolitical competition among the United States, Russia, and China. n recent years, Russia has enhanced its military presence and operations in the Arctic, and the United States, Canada, and the Nordic countries have responded with their own increased presence and operations. China’s growing diplomatic, economic, and scientific activities in the Arctic have become a matter of increasing curiosity or concern among the Arctic states and other observers. In the near future, the Arctic Region will become a geostrategic centre of interest with new sea lines of communication that will cut the transportation time between Asia and Europe by half, hydrocarbon deposits, and rare metals.

The US Department of The Navy published a document “A Strategic Blueprint for the Arctic”, which outlines how to use naval power in the Arctic Region. The USA’s ability to maintain its global power depends on maintaining its superiority in the seas and oceans. Therefore, the U.S. must win the great power struggle in the Arctic Region. In the case of China’ achieve its goals, it will weaken US naval power by creating new sea lines communications beyond US control. For sure, Russia will not be happy with these movements.
