Over the last couple of days (August 24-25), the Israeli Ministry of Defense led the annual meeting of defense officials from the two countries, called the US-Israel Defense Policy Advisory Group (DPAG). The forum was hosted by the U.S. Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, Dr. Colin Kahl.
The Israeli delegation was led by the Director General of the Defense Ministry, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Amir Eshel. The Israeli team included the Director of the Policy & Political-Military Bureau, Zohar Palti; the Head of the IDF Planning Directorate, Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar; the IDF Attaché in Washington, Maj. Gen. Hidai Zilberman; the Head of the Defense Ministry's Mission to the U.S., Michel Ben Baruch; and other senior officials.
The DPAG, which was established in 1999, is the highest-level defense forum held jointly by Israel and the U.S. The forum deals with promoting strategic cooperation between the Defense Ministry and the Defense Department as well as promoting Israel's security in a variety of defense-related fields.
The meeting discussed global and regional security challenges, and focused on Iran's progress in its nuclear program, Iranian terror in the Middle East, and Iran's actions to destabilize the region. The Israeli and American officials also discussed the IDF's force buildup plan and the multiyear defense acquisition plan. The participants in the forum also agreed on the need to tighten multilateral defense cooperation between Israel and its neighbors.
The U.S. and Israel committed themselves to boost cooperation against unmanned aerial systems (UAS) as well as cooperation in missile defense and cooperation between the two militaries. During the meeting, the under secretary of defense reiterated the Pentagon's support for the Defense Ministry's request for $1 billion worth of aid for the Iron Dome System and for other defense-related requests by the ministry. The under secretary reaffirmed the strong U.S. commitment to the security of Israel and to maintaining the IDF's qualitative military edge.
On behalf of the entire Israeli defense establishment, the Director General of the Defense Ministry, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Amir Eshel, expressed appreciation for the full commitment of the U.S. to the security of the State of Israel and for the unprecedented cooperation between the Defense Ministry and the Department of Defense in all fields.
