South Korea is keen to build the second nuclear power plant in Bangladesh, ambassador of the country Lee Jang Keun said on Monday.

‘Korea will be very interested in the second nuclear power plant in Bangladesh,’ he said after visiting ancient city Panam Nagar and Bara Sardar Bari in Sonargaon in Narayanganj.

Many Korean companies ‘will be interested,’ he said with reference to the intention expressed by prime minister Sheikh Hasina on establishing the second nuclear power plant in Bangladesh.

Claiming Korea as one of the major countries which actively utilised nuclear energy, the ambassador said Korea already collaborated in developing nuclear power facilities with the UAE.

Korea has top level technical capabilities in nuclear areas, he said, adding that there ‘will be many ways for arranging financial resources’ from the public and private sectors and through forming a consortium with other countries.

Restoration of Bara Sardar Bari, which was a commercial hub in the ancient time in Sonargaon under Narayanganj district, is a contribution to the legacy of Korea-Bangladesh relations, he said.

The restoration works were completed by local experts with spending about Tk 14 crore provided by the Youngone Corporation of South Korea, University of Asia Pacific’s professor Abu Sayeed M Ahmed, who led the restoration works, said.

Youngone Corporation, which is the sponsoring company of Korean EPZ in Chittagong, took the initiative for restoration in 2012 with Bangladesh’s architects under its CSR programme.

The restoration work was completed in 2017.
