It seems that the terrorist-designated HTS faction in Syria is about to attack and absorb more of the Turkish backed SNA faction from the Euphrates shield area. HTS cells have been arrested in TR before.
The fighting has started between HTS cells and SNA. The risk is real that TR's entire border with Syria will be controlled by a terrorist group that is "former" al qaeda
HTS won, Ahrar Awlan is a HTS group. The SNA has become even weaker and the loss of income will spur on more infighting within the SNA. HTS will continue to grow and take over all operation areas eventually.
The deployment of Turkish tanks didn't even halt HTS this time
I actually don't think it's unrealistic at all. Groups like the HTS and YPG are opportunistic most of all and commenters on here and elsewhere have talked for ages about what a massive mistake it is for Turkey to tolerate HTS.
HTS have taken two towns (Dabik, Suran) in Azez from the SNA. Eventually they'll take Mare then Afrin.
Many SNA factions have declared neutrality instead of mobilizing.
The ones with closest links to TR actually seem to have sided with HTS (Sultan Murad, Suleiman Shah, Turkmen groups).
Big fail.
Is it possible that Türkiye it's has decided to support the HTS instead of SNA and that is why they sided with the HTS?
Maybe but I don't see what the advantage is. Most of the important countries in Syria have it listed as a terrorist group including Turkiye. It destroys the Syrian opposition meaning the only interlocutors left in Geneva is the PYD and Assad.
Also not to mention the huge amount of money and other losses incurred from creating the SNA only to do a 180.
HTS also sends radical preachers and cells to Turkiye to expand their influence. They've been arrested a few times before.
Maybe they want HTS to be part of the SNA ? But this way HTS will own the SNA and we'll pay their salaries too
I see; do you know what Türkiye's official policy is in Syria? For example, is Türkiye trying to create a proper state or is it just arming various factions?
There doesn't seem to be any state structure in the Turkish-controlled areas. unlike the YPG and Assad's area.
