On Wednesday, August 26, 2020, THO hosted a webinar on “The Global and Regional Impacts of COVID-19 on Maritime Affairs”. Featuring Turkish Admiral, Cem Gurdeniz, and US Admiral, Gary Roughead.

THO was honored to host Admiral Gurdeniz and Admiral Roughead for an important discussion on maritime industry issues surrounding the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Covid-19 pandemic has shaken the global economy, challenging supply chains and testing the maritime industry. Issues that were covered include the discovery of natural gas, Cyprus, commercial impact, and challenges the pandemic has presented to the US and Turkish navies.

Both Admirals gave their unique perspective on issues facing maritime industry and the pivotal region of the Eastern Mediterranean.Admiral Gurdeniz spoke of the importance of the Eastern mediternean sea, not only to Turkey but all surrounding countries and the global economy. He regarded Cyprus as an issue that must be addressed before diplomacy can continue in the Eastern Mediterranean, and how natural gas found in the Black sea will affect Turkey and the Turkish people. Admiral Roughead outlined the stance he believes the US should take in the region, and how the US navy has been challenged by the Covid-19 pandemic.
