Hello all, I hope you enjoy the piece of work I prepared today. It is about the future of works in Turkey about Electromagnetic Rail guns. As you may all know that US Navy has dropped the project. So I learned the current situation in Turkey. I hope you enjoy it.

US is postponing the work on Rail-Gun project indefinitely, because:
1. Only 2 ships available (Zumwalt Destroyers) to provide enough power.
2. No new ships until 2028-2030 that can accommodate a Rail Gun.
3. High cost of maintenance and initial investment, for the maximum range attainable; Doesn’t make economic sense.
4. Technical advances attained in HVP (Hyper Velocity Projectiles), makes more sense in investing in. This technology developed by BAE Systems, rely on the aerodynamic structure of the rounds used and are fired from 127mm or 155mm conventional guns. HVP provides 90+ Km range with guidance when fired from 155mm guns. They have also been fired from 127mm main gun of sea platforms, reaching muzzle velocities in excess of 7mach. US was able to hit a cruise missile with these rounds. Their vice defence minister iterated along the lines of , “Tanks being able to hit cruise missiles is going to be awesome”.

Therefore I don’t see the point in carrying on with this technology. If US is throwing the towel, why are we still going on?
Aselsan’s Tufan is the only one that shows a little bit of promise. Sahi EMT has not been fired at full power. All tests they show is the gun hitting a hillside 500m away with less kinetic energy than an artillery round. They say they are aiming for 50km range. That is a “Joke” with the test pictures they publish. At least with Aselsan the whole thing is realistic. They managed to attain 9+Mach muzzle velocity for the projectile.

She can block and blind the source of these signals.
This is the part i doubt, i have no information regarding to such Jamming capability. TCG Ufuk is more of a platform to gather intelligence by all means (SIGINT,COMINT,ELINT) and moreover contribute to the threat library for EW suites.
With only 1 if the war break out and she is destroyed than what ?!
There is being one, does not mean there will be one forever. I personally expect 2, 1 for the home, 1 for the deployments. Moreover major surface platforms also will receive COMINT/SIGINT capabilities (more than what is available now)

This project has two parts; one to develop the rail gun which is made to launch the projectiles, another one is the projectile and the capsule-guidance. We should complete the first part in scientific phase (ongoing and probably won't pass to an prototype level) and gather as much as possible information during this, for the latter one it is best to go all in to adjust with the future yet there is still time to introduce conventional guidance munitions before the hyper-sonic one.

So the project does make sense as of now; we can use some outcome to design the projectile/capsule-guidance and the barrel for hyper-sonic velocities and spare the developments on rail gun to be matured for future meanwhile using conventional methods to launch this projectiles.

What made the project seem bad was speech of the some people owning some companies that work on this matter, they glorified it to some level which people started to believe we can deploy these on ships in a year from now and fire the gun.

Hello all,
My name is Özgür Ekşi. I am the founder and Editor-in-Chief of TurDef.com. I am a former defence correspondent of Hurriyet Daily (2005-2012) and founder partner and editor-in-chief of C4Defence online defence magazine (2012-2020).
I established TurDef to provide defence news from the Turkish Defence industry as the name may hint.
I just want to share recent developments about the navy. All news belong to me, otherwise, it will be noted. I might be a little bit old for forums, so please bear with my mistakes.

Mr Özgür Ekşi,

Glad to see you in defencehub, brother. Thank you for sharing your articles and thoughts with us on this platform. Feel yourself at home please.

I know its kinda offtopic but i saw this video of sahi electromagnetic railgun making some test shots.
As far as i know this gun is able to speed up the projectile to 6 mach but when you look at the video the speed of the projectile is barely 0.3-0.4 mach.

you may say that this is a test in a field and they might not have enough electricity there but its still too slow.if my 0.4 mach estimation is correct, with basic kinetic energy equation we can say that the energy you need to shoot that projectile with 6 mach speed is around 300-400 times more.also there you see some smoke coming out of the barrell.(which might be normal, i just dont know)
Can someone please enlighten me

They are similar and in the same class. They are both hull mounted mid-frequency sonars.

Defence Türk well realized our dreams but it won't happen as ASELSAN has revealed ADA-class with HIZIR

In theory, it's excellent however, I do wonder about how much it would affect the sea-keeping capabilities. Having an extra 1200kg or so topside might limit the turn rate.

There's also refuelling ports and supplies replenishment points in that area...

Exactly my point!
No I don’t think it is off topic. This weapon predominantly is being developed for sea vessels in place of their main gun. There is a thread dedicated to Railgun as well though!
When you compare the cabling and the ionised air in the form of a fireball between this and Aselsan’s Tufan , you can see the difference. Sahi canon has almost no recoil. You can see the recoil in Tufan very clearly. Tufan broke records for Turkish attempts by exceeding 1+ MegaJoule energy usage and 9+ Mach muzzle velocity.
Aselsan managed to bring enough power generation equipment to the field.
Yeteknoloji firm has been working on their Sahi-209 railgun since 2008. I have a feeling that they are constrained with budgetary problems. These guns destroy themselves a bit at each time they are fired. Also in order to get government grants they may be playing the long game to stay afloat.

That test fire were the first fire with a live warhead round. That's the reason why projectile is quite slow.

Fazıl Hızal explains why its slow in that video

A lot of “waffle”! Alot of “will” , “shall”, “going to”.
But nothing ventured nothing gained. If you do not push your limits you will not succeed in such new technologies.
I have respect for these guys though. They were the original pioneers to try this tech in Turkey. And they are trying. But what I see is a very and somehow over cautious process they are exercising; And they are way behind of Aselsan.

Yakamoz from Meteksan, Fersah from Aselsan.
Yakamoz 2020 is upgraded version of Yakamoz and on par with Fersah.
They (Yakamoz 2020-Fersah-Yakamoz) share certain parts and differs on some other parts, both stems from Tubitak at certain techs. Both can be fully integrated into CMS and operated nearly in the same way the operator does not need new training to change from one to another. Maintenance is similar as well.
