The initial meeting of Turkish armed forces has been started for the new satellite

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), one of Turkey's companies operating in the field of satellites, introduced the satellites for which it carries out production and development activities at the world's largest satellite fair Satellite 2021 in Washington, the capital of the USA.

The company also exhibited the model of the satellite to be produced within the scope of the Göktürk Reconnaissance Surveillance Satellite System Development Project signed in July with the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) at the fair.

The Göktürk Reconnaissance Surveillance Satellite is intended to meet the high resolution electro-optical satellite imagery needs of the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) after the Göktürk-1 Satellite System, which was placed in its orbit in 2016, has completed its mission.


Within the scope of the project, systems/subsystems related to satellite, fixed and portable ground stations will be procured. In addition, it is aimed to develop and use many equipment and software locally. It is also planned for Turkey to benefit more from the opportunities offered by space technology, to use the existing opportunities, capabilities, human resources, infrastructure and talents in this field, and to ensure the continuity of the gains achieved.


Started with purchase, turned into national satellite


TUSAŞ Space Systems Assistant General Manager Dr. SELMAN NAS said Göktürk-1 was provided in the way of Göktürk-1 for the need for Turkish Air Force, under the Satellite family project.

Nas stated that 79 engineers of TAI took part in the design, test and production works of this project, both at home and abroad, and that important capabilities were gained in this way.

NAS reported to do Göktürk-2 in 2007 with TÜBİTAK space and reminded them that they launch after 5 years, reported that the design life of the satellite is projected to be completed in 2017, but continues its work.

Emphasizing that the capabilities have been further improved with the earth observation satellite IMECE and the radar satellite Göktürk-3, Nas said, "After these capabilities, the SSB gave us the Göktürk Reconnaissance Surveillance Satellite Project, which will replace Göktürk-1 and serve our Air Force. This is an operational one. "As the main contractor, we will supply critical equipment with the capabilities of institutions and companies such as TÜBİTAK UZAY, TÜBİTAK BİLGEM, ASELSAN, Profen, SDT, CTech, and with our own capabilities. We will also meet some needs from abroad and make our satellite available to our army." said.

Nas stated that they held the kick-off meeting of the project last month with the participation of Air Force Command and SSB personnel.

Nas, who informed that they took the initiative for the Göktürk Renewal Reconnaissance Surveillance Satellite and started working with their own resources in 2018, emphasized that they made important progress in the works. Nas stated that thanks to this, they reached the task definition/review stage even though the contract was signed recently, and stated that they aim to reach the launch stage in the 70th month after the signing.

Native solutions in critical components

In Göktürk-1, the NAS indicating that the main contractor firms are French and Italian:

"The domestic contribution was limited in Göktürk-1. We had been limited to the critical components. For example, this time we developed the high-resolution camera system with some business troops. We have taken the steps to make this technology to Turkey. We have brought to a certain level with a high-resolution Göktürk Renewal Satellite, we have the steps that will move this much more forward. Since Göktürk-1, we will put the competencies of our critical capabilities such as the power distribution unit since Göktürk-1. We will have a satellite in which ourselves can control. We will be able to give all the support in the satellite we have developed when the support in the warranty period is to be limited in the satellite. We will be able to use 10-12 years. "

In addition, Selman Nas emphasized that they have reached the point where they can meet the communication satellite needs of the Turkish Armed Forces and the satellite operator Türksat AŞ, and noted that they have made a very important breakthrough in the field of fully electric satellite systems.

Our team continues to work rapidly within the scope of the Hera project. Our team's engineers have been conducting R & D work for this project for 5 months. As of last week, the first rocket system belonging to the Hera project has entered the assembly process. Along with this process, the work gained speed. The first version of 6 rocket systems planned to be produced within the scope of the Hera project is ready for testing! By October first week, 6 rocket systems belonging to the HERA project will be completed in the production line and ready for operational use at the end of October.Our team has gained experience in the fields of R & D, production and installation with this project and will reflect this experience on the field. As a result of the successful tests, important data is synthesized and planned to be transferred to the next systems. In the HERA project, it is planned to test rockets of the specified scale under atmospheric conditions in avionics and mechanical terms, and to use the data from these tested rocket systems in other projects.As of October, all rockets belonging to the Hera project are scheduled to meet with the sky. In November, it is planned to make a breakthrough in the engine technologies of systems such as MERGEN V MRUS and ATLAS by going beyond the concept designs in a technological sense. During this process, all launches are planned with our sound rocket system, MARMARA II S.With the end of the HERA project, our engineers working in our team will continue their work by shifting towards our original mission outside of rocket and rocketry.

Apparently, according to the animations I made, SİNOP is the number one candidate. In terms of launch safety, the coastal corner close to the KIRKLARELİ-Bulgarian border is more attractive. The closeness of SINOP to Anatolia is more important in terms of logistics. Thrace is very loaded! For some special missions, launches can also be made from the MARMARIS-Rhodes peninsula to the Southeast and Southwest sea opening (reducing the lower orbital inclination), the sea extension is longer, but the Greek whining in the Southwest, the Southeast is open as far as Egypt. Logistics in this region too! There is no other suitable place for Spaceport in TR.

I made 2-3 stage animations for SINOP with different ballistic coefficients etc... Based on this, I didn't do it for the other 2 places, because the geometry is similar, they save throwing. Polar orbits can be obtained from SINOP (also in Kırklareli) with 82-90 drc Azimuth East direction with 42+ inclination to the Equator vy 0-20 azimuth. (Azimuth, angle to launch direction from north). East v North East launches are against Russian v Black Sea coast parallel to Georgia with a ground range of 450-500 km. In my last-made animations, I used Isp=300 sec. counter, mainland Russia vy until reaching Georgia, with 3 steps, 180- I did not have any serious problems in reaching the orbital speed at an altitude of 200+ km. Kırklareli is much more comfortable in this respect, but SİNOP is superior in terms of logistics and other etc.

Do you have a cryogenic engine (or in research phase ) also what is your electric propulsion home made or imported for satellite

We have a homemade hall effect thruster and a cryogenic engine in R&D phase. The cryogenic engine also includes subsystems like cryopumps, sealing equipment/materials, combustion chamber, nozzle etc.

Is there any document/webpage that I can refer to for a 'roadmap' of Turkey's rocket program? If there has been a post/article detailing the same on this thread, please provide a link. I like to keep up with programs all over the world and rely on sites on Gunter's Space Page, but data there is very limited and only serves as sort of an index.

The Turkey page doesn't seem to be updated (cuz I know there are several programs not mentioned):

Steps Taken in Space

Roketsan engineers designed all of the critical technologies for the launch systems and the spacecraft, and all were produced using domestic means. The following critical systems and stages have been verified:

During the tests, a number of scientific payloads, such as Star Tracer and Radiacmeter, were carried into the space environment, as a further milestone in the history of Turkish systems in space, and all relevant data was collected.

Future Targets

The Sounding Rocket, scheduled for launch in 2023, is planned to be used for the testing of Micro-Satellite Launch Vehicle (MSLV) technologies, with the ability to deliver payloads of 100 kilograms to an altitude of 300 kilometres. Efforts are also underway to develop an MSLV configuration with greater capacity (payload and/or orbit altitude) in which the first stage of the MSLV is supported by side engines.

Once the MSLV project currently underway at the Satellite Launch Space Systems and Advanced Technologies Research Center of Roketsan is complete, scheduled for 2026, it will be possible to place microsatellites weighing 100 kilograms and below in a Low Earth Orbit at an altitude of at least 400 kilometres. Turkey will thus gain possession of launch, testing and manufacturing capabilities, and the ability to establish a spaceport, placing it among only a few countries in the world with the necessary knowledge and infrastructure.
