The US Army is currently testing a Tactical Ultrashort Pulsed Laser (UPSL), which is claimed to be a million times more powerful than any other laser platform in the world. This system is engineered to reach 1-terawatt for 200 femtoseconds, enough time to completely vaporize a drone or disrupt electronic systems. This means it doubles as an functional electromagnetic pulse (EMP), with the first prototype set to be revealed in 2022. Read more for two videos and additional information.

This laser weapon is ideal for specialized missions that require one to stop missiles or drones. Should there be a need to use on humans, this laser can serve many purposes, like temporary / permanent blindness or just a simple skin irritation. The ultimate goal would be the develop a powerful enough UPSL that can be mounted on various Army platforms.

''The Army’s directed energy capabilities will need to provide a layered defense with multiple ways to defeat incoming threats. High-energy lasers kill one target at a time, and high-powered microwaves can kill groups or swarms, which is why we are pursuing a combination of both technologies,” said Army Lt. Gen. L. Neil Thurgood.
