According to information released to the Facebook account VietDefense on March 13, 2021, Vietnam has launched on March 12, 2021, a new Damen RoRo 5612 multipurpose vessel at the Song Thu Corporation's shipyard in Da Nang.

Citing VietDefense, this is the 4th ship of it's class in service with the Vietnam People's Navy but the only one that was actually directly ordered by Vietnam. The 3 ships that had been previously built in Vietnam were ordered by Venezuela but were never delivered. After lingering in Vietnamese shipyards for a couple months the VPN moved to purchase the vessels themselves.

These ships improve the VPN's amphibious, transport, and logistic capabilities. They would also be beneficial for supplying the Vietnamese garrisons in the Spratly Islands.

In December 2019, Vietnamese Navy has signed a contract to build a new Roro 5612 multipurpose amphibious transport ship designed by the Dutch Shipbuilding Group Damen and constructed at Song Thu Corporation in Vietnam. It was the fourth Roro 5612 class of the Vietnam Navy that will receive YN541056 number.

The RoRo 5612 multipurpose vessel is designed to conduct a wide range of missions including law enforcement, aids to navigation (ATON), replenishment at sea (RAS), the re-supply to Defence Force bases and the provision of disaster relief.

The RoRo 5612 has a length of 57.2 m, and a draft of 2.75 m. The ship is powered by two MTU 12V2000M61/1A engines developing 1,610 bhp a t 1,800 rpm. She can reach a maximum speed of 10.5 knots. It also has auxiliary engines including two Caterpillar C6.6 TA, 440 V, 187 kVA, 60 Hz and one Caterpillar C4.4 NA, 440 V, 187 kVA, 60 Hz

The RoRo 5612 has a crew of 16 with accommodation including fitted one captain’s cabin, one single officer’s cabin and seven double crew cabins, galley/mess and wheelhouse. The deck equipment includes one anchor winches 3x DMT, 10 m/min., one deck crane 14 tons at 19.50 meters, and one capstan 3 tons, 15 m/min. Navigation and communication equipment includes a GMDSS A3 Radar, a magnetic compass, gyrocompass, GPS, echo sounder, autopilot, AIS, and a speedlog.
