The ZA-35 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun was developed by ARMSCOR in the early 90s under the ZA-SPADS or Self-Propelled Air Defense System programme. However development work on this SPAAG has stopped. Some sources claim that only one vehicle was built.

The ZA-35 SPAAG is armed with two Lyttleton Engineering M-35 guns. These guns have simple design and proved to be reliable. Combined rate of fire is 1 100 rounds per minute. This SPAAG uses standard NATO ammunition. It fired HE-FRAG rounds against air targets and AP-I against light armored vehicles. This round penetrates a 100 mm steel plate at a range of 1 000 m. Guns are belt-fed from two magazines, holding 230 rounds each. Magazines are replaced within 8 minutes.

The ZA-35 is fitted with EDR 110 surveillance and tracking radar, which can track up to 100 air targets simultaneously. Antenna may be raised to a height of about 5 meters for increased visibility, when the vehicle is stationary. It can provide targeting data to other nearby SPAAGs and air defense systems, which do not have radars. Vehicle is also fitted with computerized fire control system, fully-stabilized gunner's sight, laser rangefinder. The ZA-35 can engage targets at night and in any weather conditions.

Front armor of the ZA-35 provides protection against 23 mm projectiles. All-round protection is against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle has improved protection against landmines.

Vehicle has a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver.

The ZA-35 is based on extended Rooikat tank destroyer 8x8 wheeled chassis. Engine compartment is located at the hull rear. Vehicle is powered by a diesel engine, developing 563 hp. It is also fitted with auxiliary power unit. Central tyre inflation is fitted for improved cross country mobility.

The ZA-35 was intended to be used together with the ZA-HVM short-range SAM, also based on the Rooikat chassis. An air defense battery was planned to comprise of three SPAAGs, one SPAAM as well as local warning radar.
