Regarding Juba II : King of Numidia during Antiquity , Born 48 BC near Hippo (Today Annaba, Algeria) and buried AD 23 in
Tipaza,
Algeria.
- Why are there today many writings claiming Juba II being the King of Morocco instead of Algeria ?
If we break it down and put it in a historical context
Juba and his wife Cleopatra Selene II first ruled part of historical Numidia, They then were given the larger Mauritania while Numidia was incorporated into the Roman Empire. Like his ancestors, Juba had two capitals one that is
Iol (Cherchell) in Algeria and the other is Volubilis in Morocco where a famous bust of his was found.
Well you see Juba is fully Numidian by ancestry, Roman and Greece by education, He worked by his ancestral rules to some extent and he is even recorded to have built a temple to venerate his Grandfather king Hiempsal II as far as Numidian faith goes (King Micipsa built a temple for his father Massinissa). Juba being king of "Moroccan Mauritania" was the mere wish of Emperor Augustus as Numidia was very productive and way too important to leave out, Mauritania, on the other hand, was a barren land that only flourished under Juba II and Cleopatra Selene.
That being said, Juba ruling parts of today's Morocco doesn't make him any less "Algerian"
