World biggest ship bulider, China built 247 ships and 7.16 million CGT in the first five months with orders lining up to 2025

Jun 17, 2022

China’s current handheld orders for shipbuilding, rank first in the world which have been scheduled to the year 2025. Three fifths of the orders come from foreign customers such as France and Switzerland.

Affiliated to shipbuilding, China has nine of the top 10 enterprises in the global ship repair business, with output value reaching 35 billion yuan ($5.23bn), another world’s first.

This is what this report says, Switzerland does have fleets though.

The article (2020) states: Today, Switzerland’s high seas fleet consists of 27 ships, operated by four shipping companies.

That there are foreign shipping companies that might be registered in Switzerland - I would not exclude that possibility.
Just for a comparison:
German merchant ships operated under German flag around 200. (7 million t.) under foreign flag around around 1500 ships (35 million t.)

Maybe you can dig up some details regarding these Switzerland orders - otherwise I would rather tend to forward, that Switzerland just sounds nice so as to include in a name list.

Yes Infrastructure accomplishments in China are mind-boggling. And the same applies towards countries that are partners in the one road one world project.
E.g. the quality of highway's and country roads in China - especially those since 2012 are great. Before there was a lot of "dubious" sub-contracting business going on - and one can see the extensive repair-renewal projects that are presently on the way.

Xi's relentless efforts to rid the country of corruption are showing a significant improvement in all walks of life and the countries progress.

Hmm...Algeria - unfortunately I have never been to your country, but I imagine it to be a very scenic and interesting country.

But the government zero covid lockdown policies are too harsh than necessary, espcially to Beijing and Shanghai, they significantly disrupted our daily lives , public discontent over these policies is simmering. Beijing has just one locally transmitted case today, finally light in the tunnel after almost 2 months, hopefully our life could be back to normal soon. I have had done virus tests literally every single day for a month already...

I feel you xizhimen :) the look-down ended last week around my compound - and is getting hopefully even more relaxed after June.
Before the look-down Shanghai recorded at highest 20,000+ cases - now after 6 weeks it's back to 1-2 digit numbers. That people in general aren't happy is understood. Especially those running small businesses or shops.
But as long as Beijing sticks to it's Zero policy - these Lock-down's will not be avoidable IMO. Let's see if Beijing will continue to do so - or if they can come up with another solution.

In case you would want to continue in this topic - feel free to open a separate topic in the China section. :)

Technology breakthroughs propel China's shipbuilding capability

Chinese shipyards topped the three major metrics used by the global shipbuilding industry in 2021, with the highest number of completed orders, new orders and orders on hand. As one of the world's leading manufacturers of large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, the country has witnessed rapid development of shipbuilding technologies over the past 20 years. China has already successfully built and delivered more than 30 LNG carriers. China has also already witnessed rapid development in building aircraft carriers and cruise ships.

China's shipbuilding sector continues to lead in global market

26 JULY 2022, TUESDAY, 03:38

China remained the world's leading shipbuilder in the first half of this year, as its market share ranked first globally in output, new, and holding orders, official data showed.

The country's shipbuilding output hit 18.5 mln deadweight tonnes (dwt) in the January-June period, accounting for 45.2% of the world's total, data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed.

New shipbuilding orders, another major indicator of the shipbuilding industry, came in at 22.46 mln dwt in the first six months, taking up 50.8% of the global market share.

By the end of June, China's shipbuilding holding orders rose 18.6% year on year to 102.74 mln dwt, with a global market share reaching 47.8%, the ministry said.

China’s shipbuilding industry is booming, including aircraft carriers, LNG tankers, and container ships

Business & Technology
China is building a lot of big ships. More precisely, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) is building aircraft carriers, liquified natural gas (LNG) tankers, passenger liners, and container ships.

Barry van Wyk Published July 29, 2022

SupChina-ChinaEDGE-07.29.2022-CSSC-shipbuilding-boom.png

This week, China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) 中国船舶集团, a massive state-owned conglomerate, held an open day for journalists in Beijing, and then over four days took the media to see shipyards in Dalian and Qingdao to view the company’s dazzling array of new ships, including:

  • China’s first domestically produced aircraft carriers, the Shandong and the Fujian.
  • The world’s largest roll-on/roll-off (able to handle wheeled transport) passenger ship, built by a subsidiary, CSSC Offshore & Marine Engineering Company (COMEC) 中船防务, and currently undergoing sea trials, with delivery scheduled for August. With 13 decks and 533 guest rooms, the ship is equivalent to a 10-storey mobile five-star hotel with a garage for 800 cars.
  • China’s first large scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers with membrane tanks and a capacity of 175,000 cubic meters (46.23 millions gallons).
  • China’s first 210,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT) Newcastle-type intelligent bulk carrier, which will be used to transport iron ore from Australia to China.
  • China’s first 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU, the standard size of a container) ultra-large container ship, currently the world’s largest container ship.
China’s shipbuilding industry is booming, as are CSSC’s orders:
  • CSSC received new orders amounting to 10 million DWT in the first half of the year, and as of the end of May, the company held orders for 243 ships of a total of over 20 million DWT, to be delivered up to 2026, including LNG tankers and more than 60 container ships.
  • Over 90% of the orders are for mid-to-high-end ship types, and also include new generation (and cleaner) dual fuel (using both LNG and conventional diesel fuel) bulk LNG tankers of 209,000 DWT each.
  • Orders for LNG tankers have been a big source of revenue in 2022. In January, for example, CSSC signed a contract for 6 LNG tankers with MOL Group of Japan, which at 7.5 billion yuan ($1.11 billion) was the largest contract for LNG tankers ever signed by a Chinese shipbuilding company. In total over the last year, Chinese shipbuilders received orders for 30 new LNG tankers, an increase of 6.5 times year-on-year, and accounting for a share of 32.6% of the global market.

The context

According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in the first half of the year, based on the major shipbuilding indicators (completion rate, new orders, and current orders), China accounted for the largest market share in all three categories in terms of DWT, namely 45.2%, 50.8% and 47.8%, respectively. Like the rest of China’s economy, April (at the height of the Shanghai lockdown) was a low point for the shipbuilding industry, but it has rebounded in the last few months:
  • In June, total new orders amounted to 4.76 million DWT, an increase of 107% month-on-month, and the completed shipbuilding volume was 4.22 million DWT, an increase of 64.2% month-on-month.
  • As of the end of June, the Shanghai Shipyard, which this year has a 40% share of the domestic ship design market and a 22.5% share of the global market, has received more than 100 design orders for various types of ships.
CSSC was born out of a shipbuilding government ministry in the 1960s, but shifted from military to predominantly civilian shipbuilding in the early 1980s. The company became China’s undisputed shipbuilding colossus in 2019 when it merged with the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) 中国船舶重工集团, now holding an estimated 20% share of the global shipbuilding market.
CSSC is riding at the top of China’s current shipbuilding boom, and over the next few years, the company is expected to make huge profits. According to one estimate, from 2022 to 2024, the company’s revenue will be 65.31 billion yuan ($9.67 billion), 86.07 billion yuan ($12.75 billion), and 108.97 billion yuan ($16.14 billion), year-on-year increases of 9.3%, 31.8% and 26.6%, respectively; and net profit will be 9.92 billion yuan ($1.46 billion), 25.96 billion yuan ($3.84 billion), and 59.81 billion yuan ($8.86 billion), year-on-year increases of 364%, 162%, and 130%, respectively.

The takeaway

China’s shipbuilding industry is in a boom period, and the company building China’s aircraft carriers is the world’s largest shipbuilding company that is building various other groundbreaking ships, notably LNG tankers with new generation fuel systems.
