'Russia is with you' Putin vows to back Xi in US row over Taiwan visit

RUSSIA has suggested it's ready to back China as tensions rise with Taiwan ahead of a potential trip to the self-ruled island by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Moscow's Ostankino television tower displayed two large signs saying "Russia is with you" on Monday. The message on the 540-metre structure was featured in Chinese and came amid increasingly hostile threats from Beijing to Washington over its stance on Taiwan.

According to Alexander Gabuev, a senior analyst at the Carnegie Moscow think tank, the sign could have "hardly" been put on the tower "without an official approval" – suggesting the decision came from the Kremlin.

Mr Gabuev, who posted a video of Ostankino, added: "Context needs no explanation."

China and Russia, despite not sharing an official alliance, currently enjoy the best relations they have had since the late Fifties.

Meanwhile, President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin described their friendship as one with "no limits".

As China-US ties appear fragile, Moscow's involvement — in the shape of a show of support for Beijing — would come as no surprise.

Ms Pelosi, who began an Asia tour earlier on Monday in Singapore, was due to spend Tuesday night in Taiwan, three people briefed on the matter told Reuters. The potential Taiwan leg of the tour is however not yet in her public schedule.

Last Wednesday, US President Joe Biden said he thought the US military believed a Pelosi visit to Taiwan was "not a good idea right now".

And Beijing's blunt reaction to the prospect of a stop on the island by the US House Speaker hinted Mr Biden might be right.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said it would be "a gross interference in China's internal affairs" if Ms Pelosi visits Taiwan, and warned it would lead to "very serious developments and consequences."

Zhao told a regular daily briefing: "We would like to tell the United States once again that China is standing by, the Chinese People's Liberation Army will never sit idly by, and China will take resolute responses and strong countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity."

The White House dismissed China's rhetoric as groundless and inappropriate.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said in an interview with CNN: "It is not uncommon for congressional leaders to travel to Taiwan.

"We shouldn't be, as a country, we shouldn't be intimidated by that rhetoric, or those potential actions.

"This is an important trip for the Speaker to be on and we're going to do whatever we can to support her."

Ms Pelosi is third in line for the presidency after Mr Biden and vice-president Kamala Harris.

Should she include Taiwan in her tour of Asia, it would be the first visit of a US House speaker in a quarter of a century.

By fighting in Europe harder and keeping Nato busy, weakening US allies in the west.
The effect of the war in Ukraine is the massive weakening of Russia and the military re-armings of Europe (thereby strengthening the NATO alliance)… not really sure what you're talking about here.

Germany will start deploying its air force in the Asia Pacific this year. Hardly anything seen as weakened.

I guess you know EU is deep in energy crisis and their economy is crashing and inflation is soaring, who knows what it will be like there in next winter. Russia is winning and EU can't sustain themselves for long without Russian oil and gas.

If the relationship between China and the west goes beyond the point of no return, the unrivaled Chinese industrial and manufacturing juggernaut will be at Russia's disposal, then the west will be doomed.

That thing happened before the current Taiwan crisis. My question is simple. Now that Putin has use its energy card in Ukraine what card is left to help buddy Xi Jinping. Surely it can't be money, nor could it be tanks.

So what is left for Putin to help ?

As long as they keep fighting, not letting up, and sucking EU into a deep hole, it's of great help to China.

China wants political and energy support from Russia, not military aid, cause there's no war coming for China. This visit won't turn into a war, it will only turn China and US into enemies from competitors. A new cold war may be coming and China will definitely win this one with much stronger real economy.

China and US won't fight a war, a mere visit won't turn into a war, I can bet on it. China only needs Russia to weaken US allies in the west.
Russia can't even weaken ukraine are you sure they will weaken West lmao delusional.

Once again shows how much the Chinese crave Russian support ; a throwback to Soviet - Sino days. Russian will always globally be considered superior to China.
