Taiwan is planning a record NT$580 billion (US$ 18.3 billion) defense budget for next year. That was the word from Premier Su Tseng-chang while speaking at the legislature on Tuesday.

Citing China’s increased military activity around Taiwan, Su says Taiwan will have a record high military budget next year. The premier also spoke about Taiwan’s indigenous defense technology. He says Taiwan has already built three T-BE5A Brave Eagle advanced jet trainers and is planning to mass produce the planes. The navy’s first 10,000-ton amphibious transport ship with anti-aircraft missiles will also be completed by the end of this month. Additionally, Taiwan will see five more ships like its Ta Chiang finished next year.

Regarding weapons purchases, Su says the Biden administration has already approved six arms packages and Taiwan will continue to buy arms from the US. The US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee also recently passed the Taiwan Policy Act which. If passed by Congress, it would give Taiwan an unprecedented US$ 4.5 billion in military assistance.

Su also notes the strong support for Taiwan among other democratic nations. He says this year, lawmakers from the US, Japan, France, Sweden, The Czech Republic and the European Parliament have visited Taiwan. Many leaders of democracies have also stressed the importance of Taiwan’s ability to defend itself.

Anything is possible at this point, gloves are off. In a couple of years China lost all of its soft power. The Uygur unhuman treatment exposed their abhorrent mindset. What comes around, goes around!
