The sale of F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye is not intertwined with Sweden's membership in NATO, but some Congress members draw a connection between the two issues, the U.S. State Department said Monday.

"We do not believe that they are linked or should be linked," said State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller at a press briefing, in response to a question by an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter about the current status of the potential sale.

Reiterating the previous statements from the Biden administration, Miller said Washington made clear to the Turkish government that the sale of F-16s has to be approved by the U.S. Congress.

"And there are members of Congress who believe that the two issues are closely tied together," he said. "So while we do not believe that they're linked, we're not the only actor in this process. We made that clear directly to Turkish officials."

Miller did not provide an update on a timeline.

The spokesman reiterated the U.S. position on Sweden's accession, saying it "should be approved as soon as possible," adding that the U.S. appreciates President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's support for it.

Ankara requested F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits from Washington in October 2021, which is awaiting a green light from the U.S. Congress. The $6 billion deal would include the sale of 40 jets as well as modernization kits for 79 warplanes already in the Turkish Air Force’s inventory.

Although the Biden administration repeatedly said it wants to move forward with the sale of F-16 jets to Türkiye, key lawmakers on Capitol Hill have vowed to nix the deal over several demands, including making the purchase contingent on Ankara's approval of Sweden's NATO membership bid.

Officials from the Biden administration, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, previously said the Biden administration does not link the two issues.

However, President Erdoğan on Sunday said after a brief chat with U.S. President Joe Biden on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in New Delhi that the U.S. makes such a connection, and it "upsets” Ankara.

"We had a quick word with Biden. We also discussed the F-16 issue," Erdoğan said at a news conference after the G-20 summit in India, "Unfortunately, friends keep bringing Sweden up when it comes to the F-16 issue. Such an approach seriously upsets us."

We dont need Those F-16 right now.
We do need them. Or some other jet to help our aging air force.

Hürjet is not a direct replacement for F-16, it's payload is much lighter than an F-16, almost 1/3, and it's light attack variant is even further away than its original role, a trainer. Kaan is even worse in that regard because we don't even have an engine capable of lifting it off the ground yet, let alone one with actual 5th generation characteristics. It doesn't matter how much money we throw at these, and judging by the way we are looking for partners for Kaan it looks like we don't have enough to throw at it by ourselves. Even if everything goes perfectly both with engines and Kaan itself, we are 10-15 years away from having Kaan in meaningful numbers. And that is a big if, engine development is one of the hardest feats of engineering around.

Our air force is falling behind, we need reinforcements, whether it is F-16s or some other jet. There is no need to lie to ourselves like this, in fact, it is one of the most dangerous things we can do. And before someone bring KE again, it hasn't even fired any munition yet, in its current configuration it is slower than Mach 1 and doesn't even have an AESA radar yet.

We need them now but even we signed the contact those F-16 will not come within years!

Even Taiwanese wait 4 years after signed until the first jet come.

Turkiye will wait for many many year, maybe 10 years or those F-16V will never come.

I wonder that why you think we can buy those F-16 like go to supermarket and bring them back.

F-16V is like the EU VISA FREE to TURKIYE,said come in 2016 but never never come.

KE and Anka-3 are coming online in less than a couple of years. When equipped with the TF6K and EASA radar the enemy will not even know what capability we have. We will also go ahead and upgrade our own F16. So we keep our money in our pockets and do not feed it to the bullies. Critical 4 months ahead, once we make the TF6K nicely and fly Kaan first time, then we are counting down 5 years to become an independent military power with the TF35K coming online.

American s F-16 case is like a girl told you "I will have dinner with you soon if you treat me much better"

No matter how many messege or gift you give her,You can never date her.

Just talk and delay.

She will not answer you a until you have a better girlfriend (KAAN)

Hurjet cant match F-16V but far better than none.

Taiwan ordered the F16V in 2018 and now "it will come in 2024"

If We ordered it today ,when will they come even every thing go well?2030 or 2035?

We have to hurry up MURAD and supplement the Air force with Siper, Drones and other land based systems until KAAN. That's the only realistic path for us. Drones can do most A2G missions, Anka 3 when it's ready can do ground missions even KAAN won't be doing. SAM systems are very effective against 4th gen fighters. I don't know how good they would be against Rafale with the EW or Typhoon but they aren't 5th gen after all.

We will not wait as much as other countries because Tusas has the capability to build our own F-16s, as they did before. They have even shown that capability to Lockheed Martin. In fact, if we got these F16s, they would probably build for other countries again and that would be a pretty lucrative contract for them.

Less than a couple of years? Anka-3 hasn't even flown yet, KE flew but still too slow and hasn't fired a single missile. TF6000 hasn't even started yet and Murad has been getting installed for about a year now and won't start deliveries in 2 or 3 years. And 5 years for TF35000 is nothing but a pipe dream that has no basis in reality whatsoever.

Honestly, I'll just stop replying to these types of comments from now on. It is really, really childish. There is being proud of your country and your engineers and what they can do and there is living in an alternate reality where everything magically works out and everything you build is miraculously better than anything else anyone has. This has been a problem for us for many years now, we seem to lose ourselves in our own propaganda instead of facing the reality of our situation and getting ready accordingly.

Mr Temel Kotil's prediction is we make the TF35K in 5 years and also every other engine we need. If you call it childish, then you better have better credentials than him.

Nope, I don't. But people with just as good credentials and more resources than him and our engineers have failed, across the globe btw not just in one country, to achieve we are supposed to again and again. I respect Temel Kotil but he always tries to sell the best possible outcome and let's not forget he is also trying to sell his own product at the same time. Not to mention, he has helped the current regime in their election propaganda by rolling out products that were clearly not ready before, and I expect the same thing to happen again before next elections.

Just because I don't have the credentials doesn't mean I have to blindly accept a claim that is borderline impossible. Developing a jet engine is one of the hardest things in engineering and even if everything goes as smoothly as possible for TF6000 it isn't as simple as just opening CAD and increasing its diameter to get to TF35000 which is what we need.

Again, I'm done arguing with you, your posts always go beyond hope or belief and we'll never achieve anything other than derailing the thread.

I wish you can make very good relationship between Turkiye and USA.
By now That s USA who didn’t want to sell and only talk and delay, why you can not understand?

we had paid 1billion to Americans. They can give us the contract any time

But they don’t
But they don’t
They don’t!

I wish you can go to America to bring back the F-16s
The money is in their bag but they still delay

You Are like a guy that repeat 100 times British battleships are far better than Yavuz battle cruiser in 1915.

I think it's more optimistic to believe we can get those F-16s from the US than to believe in TF35K prototype in 5 years.

Anyway, at the end of the day there is only one solution and it's Ozgur. Its timeline goes to 2027-2029 but it's good enough.

Actions speak louder than words, and Americans know that very well. They should stop making explanations and excuses and act instead.

We're gonna have to start giving out some kind of Defence Darwin award every time this argument is made.

Already, the US F16 orders are full until 2029. If an order is placed now, it will start arriving in 2029.

Of course, things will change if Tusaş produces it.
If israelis order that ,it will start arriving the next day.
If Japanese order that ,it will start arriving in 2029
If we order that ,it will start arriving after Greek get F-35
